can't connect Premium account to KCRW iOS app via Spotify iOS app

I can't seem to connect my Spotify Premium account to the KCRW iOS app on my iPhone 13 (running IOS 16.6.1). When I like songs in the KCRW app, I want them to populate in a Spotify playlist in my Spotify iOS app. In the KCRW app, I go to App Settings->Streaming and click Connect next to Spotify. This opens the Spotify iOS app (fully updated) and shows the Authorize screen about what the KCRW can access in Spotify. I click Agree, it sends me back to the KCRW app but I get the message "Premium Account Required: A Spotify Premium account is required to use this feature." Is this a bug? I've read about issues with people getting the Premium Account Required message for the Mac OSX Spotify desktop application (when it's the older version) but nothing about a Premium message on an iOS app. Could it be that the Spotify iOS app was overhauled and doesn't work well now in connecting to third party apps like KCRW? If anyone has any ideas about how to resolve this issue, let me know.
