iOS 9.2.1 upgrade - Spotify stops playback

Recently upgraded to latest iOS release for iPhone 5s. Have latest Spotify too. Today I found out that playback in offline mode stops as soon as app is not in focus. I does not play in background, nor when lock screen is activated. Once app is back in focus playback is resumed. Background running is somehow prohibited suddenly. Anyone else with same symptoms? Any remedy?
I have premium account and was online this morning, no timeout or multiple account use issue.
Help please - at the moment the iPhone app is useless to me.

That sounds extremely frustrating.  Many app issues get fixed with a clean reinstallation, which has specific instructions here: https://support.spotify.com/us/learn-more/faq/#!/article/reinstallation-of-spotify

That sounds extremely frustrating.  Many app issues get fixed with a clean reinstallation, which has specific instructions here: https://support.spotify.com/us/learn-more/faq/#!/article/reinstallation-of-spotify

Description
The Spotify app on my iPad (IOS 9.2.1) crashes at startup every time. It is now unusable.

A more detailed description, using numbered steps
1. Updated to IOS 9.2.1. And Spotifys latente version
2. On trying to open the updated app it crashed.
3. I tried resetting the app (closing from the taskbar & restarting)
4. I tried closing all apps and rebooting iPad
5. I deleted the spotify app and reinstalled
6. and finally, I searched on Google for users with the same problem and found this thread

What I expected to happen
The app to work as advertised

What actually happened
The app has become unusable. I'm a premium use and I'm considering cancelling my subscription.

iPad Air 2

iOS 9.2.1.
