Desktop application will not accept pw that works on app and on spotify web page

I have no trouble logging into the Spotify iOS app or the spotify.com, using my email address and password.  But the desktop app will not accept those log in credentials.  I tried removing and reinstalling the desktop application and I changed my password.  Neither helped.
