I'm trying to deactivate my facebook but every time I log into spotify it reactivates my account because I signed up WITH facebook. Do I have to create a new account for this not to happen?
Solved! Go to Solution.
You must keep your Facebook account active to use Spotify. If you let your Facebook account get deleted, you can't log in to Spotify at all.

If you signed up originally without facebook, and before facebook integration, it is possible to keep spotify and deactivate your facebook account. You simply lose the "social" feature.
Yes, but I'm assuming everyone who posts about this is a new user who signed up after Facebook became mandatory (Sept 22nd 2011) and thus requires a Facebook account.
This is absolutely ridiculous, I pay £9.99 a month yet i can't cancel my Facebook account without being penalised?
If this is the case, I'm just going to do without Spotify.
I have the right to cancel Facebook without it affecting anything else.
Spotify, shame on you and get it up ye.

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂
If you created your Spotify account using Facebook then you must keep your Facebook account active in order to use Spotify, that is just how the system works.
If you would like to move to a Spotify account, you can create a new non-Facebook account from here by clicking on the "create an account using your e-mail address" button. You will then need to drop the team a direct message using the online contact form with both your account details and ask them to move your subscription and playlists from one account to the other.

That's my entire point.
Having it as 'just the way it works' isn't for the benfit of the customers.
I'd rather not have a service than be dictated to and forced to keep an active facebook account that i do not want.
I'm just throwing a suggestion out there that if Spotify want to keep customers that wish to cancel their facebook accounts, they may want to make the process as easy as possible.
Have you noticed that it's the CUSTOMER who HAS to make a new account to get around this?
For a minute there, i thought Spotify were paying ME the £9.99 a month for me to do all of the running around.
Thanks, but no thanks.
P.S
Also had to make a new spotify account just reply in order to not have to deactivate my facebook account for the 3rd time.
I notice that now I've created a new one to reply, i may as well sign back up to premium to be completely blunt, Spotify don't deserve my money.
I do understand what you are saying, and yes, there was a long time when the only way to create a Spotify account was to use Facebook. This is because Spotify and Facebook are partners and the team thought that giving users the ability to sign up using Facebook, which a lot of people have would make it simpler for users to register and use the service, and for the vast majority of people they where right.
The problem is when you create an account using Facebook, your account details are stored by Facebook, not Spotify, therefore there is no easy way to transfer accounts. To be fair, it is easy to change accounts, the customer care team are always more than willing to help you move away from Facebook if you please.
If you created an account using Facebook, then it is only reasonable that you keep the account active if you want to continue using the Spotify service on that account. If Spotify was a normal Facebook application (which in a way it is) then you couldn't continue to use it without a Facebook account could you?

I understand your logic in that Facebook hold the account details of my Spotify account but as you mentioned. nobody was given the option to start off with.
It's almost like a monopoly.
Even although they're partners, surely it would be in Spotify's best interests to allow a customer to stop using the facebook account but still keep their Spotify account up and running.
I was under the impression that I could go to my Spotify account through Spotfy's website and update my account details to include a Spotify username which would make the most sense. Alas, Spotify aren't bothered about keeping their customers (clearly)
It's a huge shame that Spotify thinks more highly of it's partnerships than its actual customers.
I'd much sooner use iTunes from now on.
I do have the exact same problem.
Please support my idea and share it. Maybe it'll help 🙂
I'm adding to this thread as it's the most recently active result in my search.
I've had a free Spotify account for years and never had to connect it to Facebook. I didn't use the account for a few months (my partner has a premium account and we use that most of the time) and when I recently logged into my account I had to agree to new Terms and Conditions, which I did. I then received an e-mail from Facebook saying that Spotify had logged into my account (I have my FB preferences set up to alert me to all log in attempts). I have not given my FB details to Spotify, or my Spotify username to FB and they use different e-mail addresses. I keep my FB account locked down with no external apps, very little personal data, I always log out and delete all cookies before doing anything else as I don't want them sharing info they collect. (Q1) How have they found each other and created this connection? Surely there's some sort of privacy infringement going on if I've never given permission or exchanged the details!
Spotify now shows my FB name and photo whereas I had a username which kept my personal details private from my playlist subscribers. (Q2) How do I disconnect them? I've looked through various forum threads, FB doesn't show Spotify in any of the app/preference menus and Spotify doesn't show the 'disconnect' preference I've seen suggested. Is it possible to do it? If not, (Q3) how can I reset my Spotify information to not show my actual name/photo?
The "disconnect from Facebook" option doesn't appear if you're logged in with Facebook so you can't accidentally get rid of your login method in case you've forgotten your username and password. It only appears if you're logged in using a Spotify account, so you can still log in to your account after disconnecting.
Log out and log back in using your Spotify username (NOT email) and password.
Now, to find out what connected you in the first place:
Have you clicked a music link on Facebook? Spotify counts clicking a Facebook music link as permission to link your account to Facebook.
Hi. I signed up with Facebook, realized that was a mistake since I like to deactivate my Facebook for weeks at a time sometimes. So I dropped that account and am now a premium subscriber with a regular spotify credential. But I'm having problems linking up to Facebook. I want the FB social integration to exist. I just want to stay up and running with my playlists whenever I am deactivated on Facebook. Is this possible? I get errors now every time I try to link the account to Facebook.
i would like to deactivate my spotify a/c altogether. i don't like the connection it has withwith fb and that i don't have a seperate password at all for spotify. how do i do this please help. ta b. dunnebri@gmail.com

Hey 🙂
You will need to drop the customer services team a message using the online contact form and someone will be able to assist you.

Of course it is. You should be able to just go to Preferences and click "Connect to Facebook".
Hi Stupify
I only ever log in using my Spotify username and password. When I signed up for the service that was the only way and It's never occured to me to try anything else.
I'm very careful about my FB usage - I've definitely never clicked on any Spotify links from it or any FB links from Spotify.
Any ideas?

If your Facebook has been somehow connected to your Spotify account, you should be able to disconnect it by pressing the Edit > Preferences > Social Network > Disconnect from Facebook button in the desktop client.

I'm with willmackie92 This is ridiculous! I was FORCED to deactivated my facebook for personal reasons. I now have another facebook account and yet Spotify doesn't allow me to switch accounts.. WTF and why?? If every other online app (such as tt.fm and Pandora) can do this with NO hassle then why is it so difficult for Spotify?
