How does Spotify Connect really work?

Hi,

I have several Spotify Connect speakers and they are working like a charm.

But my questions is, how does this connect feature see my speakers?

When I'm at work, and logged on WiFi at work, i can see two of my speakers from home via my Spotify account, and i am able to play to them and provide a decent shock for my girlfriend at home, who thinks we have ghost based on the speakers suddenly start playing.

Now, at my work i also have some speakers with same feature, and me & my girlfriend are using the same account, and she is able to see my speakers at work and vice versa.

So is my speakers always connected to your server somehow or is it the app that remembers my speakers?

If not end-users, but atleast Spotify should be able to answer this.

I would like to be able to edit/remove the entries for Spotify Connect devices that have been automatically remembered

I install products and services professionally and my devices now have the ability to stream to locations that are remote because I have previously tested/demonstrated Spotify Connect to customers

If I turn on Spotify in the car for example, it is quite easy to accidentally send the audio to another location, interrupting whatever a customer may be watching/listening to. This is not good

I'm also interested to know how this works. As i've seen that i can control my sound-system at home from my phone even if not in the same network, i was concerned that i got a security issue in my home-network configuration.

I guess this is done via websockets or something similar.

For future use: If you connect to a clients network which uses sptify connect, you should afterwards disconnect all devices from the customers spotify account via this link: https://www.spotify.com/us/account/overview/
