Implications of switching from a UK to a US account

Implications of switching from a UK to a US account

Hiya,

I have relocated from the UK to the US. My UK Spotify Premium subscription still works, of course, but requires me to keep my UK credit card active. I would like to know two things:

* Can I switch my account from a UK to a US one without having to cancel my current account?

* Does the music selection differ between the two countries? I.e. are there songs in my playlist which are going to become unavailable if I relocate my account?

Thanks,

Thibaut

As far as the first question is concerned, yes, Spotify shoud be able to modify your account to indicate that you are in the US, although you will need to contact them directly to do so.  Just fill out the contact form here:  http://www.spotify.com/us/about-us/contact/contact-spotify-support/?contact , and they should be able to help you.  Once they've changed your account, you'll need to provide a US credit card most likely.

Your second question is one I am not sure about.  I don't think the music selection differs, but then I don't know for sure.  Perhaps someone else has an answer for that?

Thanks!

Does anyone know if the US and UK selections are the same? I would doubt it but I'd like to know for sure. That would be a dealbreaker for me going forward...

Thinking out loud...

I guess one way to test whether it'll affect you would simply be to have someone with a US account check your playlists for greyed out tracks. Any "Not available in your region" messages would let you know directly where the selections differ.

I'm happy to play guinea pig if you want to share your Spotify username and publish a couple of the playlists you're most concerned about. 🙂

(Sympathetic to your plight since I'm an expat Brit too. Fortunately all my music was CD-based when I moved, so that was one thing -- probably the only thing! -- that didn't suffer an adjustment period!)

Mcthib - Hey! In answer to your two questions before...

* Yes, you can switch the country in your account, so you don't have to create a new one. You will be able to so when you update your payment details to a US card. Should you want to.

* The music catalogue does differ between the US and the UK, yes. This is due to all sorts of licensing and copyright issues. Having been playing around with my own account to see if it is noticeable for the last 10-15 minutes, I couldn't see a significant difference.

Who's your Spotify Star?

It definitely DOES make a difference. I'm into a lot of UK music, and I can't even get all of Ed Sheeran's songs, even though he's famous in both countries. I'd love to have my account switched to the UK version for good, but it hasn't worked so far.
