Incorrect (and slightly embarassing) top artists

Hi there

On my spotify profile, my top artists are constantly wrong and feature artists I never listen to - and that don't feature in any of my playlists. Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it, it's starting to damage my street cred 🙂
I hate Akon and he's been sitting at the top for while...

Today when I went on my discover tab there were random asian artists that I never listened to, like Lin Yu-chun, Andy Lau, Mavis Fan, Leehom Wang, etc. Why would this be happening? I've listened to Christmas music and the Goodies but Oldies playlist almost all week.

I'm almost completely sure it's rigged.

I'd guess that spotify is putting mainstream record labels songs first for some kind of paid promotion or whatever.

I am currently having this problem.
First of all, there are less artists displayed in my top ones, I used to have 15+ or so and now I have seven, two of them being artists I've never heard of in my entire life and two of them which I've heard like twice and months ago. I would like to get this bug fixed as soon as possible (I already hid it from friends), because honestly it's horrible.

This is happening again. Showing waaaay too many artists and a lot of them look like top artists from some of the people i follow... (that i never listen to). Had to hide the feature. Please look into this bug 🙂

Not a bug. It's by design or it wouldn't still be happening. This would have been addressed long ago....

Same thing happening to me today, my recently played artists have completely changed from the day before to artists I have either never played or played once, also there are twice as many artists listed as there were before. In addition to that, I am not able to view other people's recently played artists anymore either. Is this a bug or an actual update? If its an actual update then please revert back to the layout before...

This is happening to me right now. Last night my top artists were completely different, now whenever I listen to one song by an artist they get added to my recently played, which never used to happen before. It used to be that you'd have to listen to an artist multiple times for them to be displayed in your recently played tab. My recently played tab also now features people I haven't listened to in months. Also, now that I've gone back and counted, there are 50 artists listed in my recently played, when there is usually only 10-15. Please fix this!

The bands that are supposedly my top artist and **bleep** I've never heard nor listened to, what kind of **bleep** is spotifying pulling here? Getting paid to fake support for **bleep** bands lately? Only a 6 year bug, sure they're working hard to get it fixed...

If you disconnect then reconnect it essentially manually refreshes. I've had this same problem for like two years and just tried this, and it refreshed to a much more accurate and less embarrassing top artist lineup.

Pretty sure that two week refresher the rep mentioned doesn't happen.

Same problem, but you guys shouldn't be fooled by the possibility of a 'fix' for this, as we all know the artificial intelligence capabilities of Spotify, and they wouldn't do such a thing on a major feature if not on purpose.

As some have already pointed out, it's probably just a major marketing play to show off the most trending/rich (therefore powerful) artists of the pop scene.

I have mavado - come into my room as my top artist for a year. I have never heard this song and I recently played it on youtube from my computer to check what the **bleep** it is. My ears almost started bleeding because it was such trash. This song has been on my top for tinder for a while this is embarrasing to me and a **bleep** job on spotifies part. There are songs I listed to almost every day and they are never featured on my top artist. This is a serious problem and apps are going to stop using spotify very soon. I would say in the next 6 months.

Same here, one my two most listened to artists, Freedom Call doesn't show up in my favorites, but that one time I listened to a few songs from dan bull? You better believe that shows on my favorites, the top artists is completely illogical, maybe change the formula to choose most listened to artists or most liked artists, because it currently seems that this is not the case.

It's by design and it has to do with money making in the form of false advertising .

I love how spotify tries to deny this problem and does nothing about it even though there seems to be endless threads of people complaining about this problem. Pretty whack. Honestly after a few years of using spotify and constantly having issues that never get resolved I'll probably just end up cancelling my subscription.

I am having the same problem. I connected my Spotify with my tinder. It says my anthem is Ed Sheeran - River. I have never, not even once listened to that song in my life.

I am having the same issue, three or more artists I never heard of, keep appearing on my recently played artists, I even checked my weekly recomendations, maybe I've heard then by suggestion, but no. If this keeps happening I'll be thinking of closing my family account and move over.
