Just wondering about premium

Hey,
I'm new to spotify so apologies if this is common knowledge. I'm considering upgrading to premium, I don't like the idea of free music, makes me feel dirty... I'm always going to prefer physical cds both for audio quality and just cause it's better. 
When you go to upgrade to premium it says you get improved sound quality but from what I've read spotify doesn't support flac, and I'm assuming for the same reasons it doesn't support wav. Does improved sound quality just mean higher Kbps mp3s because if so it doesn't seem worth it, it's still a lossy, destructive codec.
