No required location or else you disable the internet

No required location or else you disable the internet

Spotify is the only app that REQUIRES me to turn on my location or it turns off my Internet. Literally every other app can play for hours without issues, not Spotify. I get there songs in (if that) and Internet is "disabled". The one time I got through to a rep I was told " just turn on your location and let us track you. Everyone else just does it." Thanks for being "customer service oriented" 🙄

Hi @Zipsplash,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome. We hope you don't mind us moving your post out of the ideas section to one of our Help boards for now.

Now, we'd just like to get more info about what's happening first. Just to be sure, when you have the Location off on your device, Spotify loses access to the internet? If you get an error message, send over a screenshot so we can take a look.

On another note, does this happen on one device in particular? If so, send over the make/model and OS of the device along with the Spotify version you are currently running.

We'll keep an eye out for your reply!

Good Evening,

Thanks for the reply. Here are the answers to your questions:

I can use other apps (peacock, netflix, and other streaming devices), but only Spotify stops because there is no internet. When I pulled up my wifi connection, it says "disabled". But no other devices or apps have that issue. And of course, as I type this, it didn't drop. But next time it happens, I can screenshot that.

It happens on my Lenovo Yoga tablet (YT-X705F) and it runs on Android 10.

Hey @Zipsplash,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

Could you check if clearing stored cache makes any difference? Once it's done, try signing out and back in again. This should resync the account info.

We can also recommend that you check the apps that are connected to your account, to see if any might be related to what you're experiencing. You can check this here. An option is to remove permissions from all apps that you see, or the apps that doesn't look familiar to you. To reconnect an app later, all you need to do is sign back into that app and give Spotify access again.

Should the issue persist or the same error message resurface, feel free to send us a screenshot of how things look from your end.

Cheers!

Hi Maria,

Attached are three screenshots that show how my internet is "disabled", but not disconnected. The tablet will show "disconnected" when I restart my router but only "disabled" when I use spotify. My connection is "Calisworld".

I have regularly cleared the cache, deleted and reinstalled the app (twice), and well as changed my password and checked all of the devices using my account. Everything is copacetic there.

Thanks for your attention to this,

Daniel

Hey @Zipsplash,

Thanks for your reply.

Can you please try re-uploading the screenshots since we don't see anything on our end? Also, check your device's settings and make sure that Spotify is set as an exception in any performance-optimizing services.

Keep us posted.

Sorry the screenshots didn't attach. I tried three times, but to no avail. I will try from a different computer tomorrow.

I have noticed several things since I started paying attention to this issue:

1. Spotify will lose the internet connection when I turn off my screen.

2. I primarily use spotify on my work computer, tablet, and phone. When I turn off spotify at home (and turn off the screen of the tablet), I find after using spotify at work, it turns on the screen of the tablet at my house (miles away).

3. Of the three primary devices with spotify, the work computer and phone sync with each other. But the tablet normally doesn't. So I can play my phone and tablet on two different songs in the same room without duo.

4. After checking the settings, nothing seems to be turned off for spotify (any help in the direction of where to find those on an andriod would be great). But I did see I have a few settings turned on for spotify according to my tablet. BUT when I get into my spotify and what is allowed, it shows access to many more things. I can add those screenshots. It was disconcerting to find that list from spotify of everything they have access to in my tablet - and assuming my phone and work computer as well.

Hi @Zipsplash,

Thanks for the reply.

We advise against so many different topics being covered in the same thread, as this dilutes the conversation and makes it difficult to stay focused on the core question. In that regard, we'd like to focus more closely on the issue related to location services. For your other questions, here are our answers:

  1. This seems unlikely to be connected to Spotify. We recommend reaching out to your device manufacturer for further investigation.
  2. Try turning off Spotify Connect in the background from the app settings
  3. This behaviour is usually network related. Check your firewall settings across your devices and router and disable any VPNs or Proxy servers you may be using
  4. Where these settings are can vary between devices, so we cannot say for sure. Usually long pressing the icon will lead you there.

Regarding the location services issue, please try one more time to attach the screenshots as those will help us a lot. You can attach it to your next response by using the Insert image option in the post editor. If it still doesn't work, try attaching them through Google Drive instead.

Hope this helps.
