Cards are the only option, yes, but you can purchase a prepaid Visa/Mastercard/Maestro card and pre-load it with a certain amount that you are willing to spend and then associate the card with the account.
There are certain cards like this that are "gift cards" and not really classified as prepaid credit cards. Make sure that you avoid those as they will not work.
