My Question or Issue

The app needs to be closed and reopened to display anything except for a loading screen. This happens only when the app has been in the background for at least like 5-10 minutes and not playing anything.

Hey @midioca,

Thanks for posting in the Community.

This sounds like you have a background optimization setting turned on on your tablet. How to turn this off for the Spotify app varies between manufacturers, but you can try looking for it in the settings.

Let us know if that brought any change.

Cheers!

Hi Dian!

thanks for the reply but unfortunately changing the settings did not help the problem.

I tried all the settings I could find but even with Spotify prioritised and excluded from those settings the contents still won't load sometimes.

Hey @midioca,

Thanks for the reply and the taken steps.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, could you list the settings you've changed on your device? Here is a web page where the most common ways to do this are listed.

Let us know how that went.

Cheers!

Hi Dian!

thank you for the link, I was able to find one setting, "Adaptive battery" I had overlooked. Sadly it did not help either and the problem still occurred.

Other than turning off "Adaptive battery" I turned off "Put unused apps to sleep" in Background usage limits and selected "Unrestricted" for the battery usage in the app settings, allowing Spotify to use battery in the background without restrictions.

Other settings mentioned on the web page are not there anymore, I couldn't find them, even using the search tool.

And even though it isn't mentioned on the web page I also turned off "Power saving" in the battery settings, just in case, as it says to effect background activity in it's description.

Hi @midioca,

Thanks for your reply and for the info provided.

In this case, you can try clearing the cache from the Spotify app > Settings > Storage > Clear cache. Also from your device's Settings > Apps > Spotify > Storage > Clear cache.

On another note, did you notice if this maybe started happening after an update or has it always happened? And does the app work correctly while is open and playing while in the background?

We'll keep an eye out for your reply!

Hi Susan!

I already did clear the cache multiple times using both ways since this started happening. But I did it again and theres no difference.

My device did not do a software update close to the start of this problem occurring. I don't know about Spotify because I have automatic updates turned on for it.

The only thing that really happened around the time of the problem starting was, now that you mention the cache, me removing all downloads from my tablet (and clearing the cache). They got a little out of hand filling over 6 GB of my tablets storage.

I had forgotten that I did that as I didn't (and don't) think that doing this could have something to do with the issue, do you think it has?

It never happened while Spotify is open or playing music/podcasts.

Hey @midioca,

Appreciate the insight you've shared. You're right to assume that it's possible the removal of some of the downloads caused the issues as more often than not some old cached files are to blame for the app's misbehavior.

In those cases we'd recommend a clean reinstall of the app which ensures that all files have been removed and you're starting fresh. You can find the steps for that here.

If that doesn't do it for you, we'll need to know if this happens if you log in from a different account and if you experience this on other mobile devices as well.

Keep us in the loop here.

Hi Elena!

A clean reinstall seems to have worked, the app is loading fine every time now!

Thanks a lot for all the help 🙂

“Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.”– Maria von Trapp

Hi again!

Unfortunately only ~4 days after I replied, believing the problem was solved, it started to occur again.

Now every time the app is opened from the background, the content once again won't load until the app is restarted.

Also, since I haven't mentioned it before, very few times simply restarting the app won't help, and the only way to make the app open with content again is to press force stop in the app settings.

This happened before I did the clean reinstall, but as I said not very often so I forgot to mention it before.

After the clean reinstall I did nothing with the app but download and listen to music, no deleting downloads or something else in the settings.

Hi there @midioca,

Thanks for the post.

Sorry to hear that the app is not working properly again.

Can you tell us, if you've allowed Spotify to use both mobile data and WiFi from your phone's settings? It's possible that the content is not loading due to some networking restrictions.

Cheers.

Hi!

Spotify is allowed to use WiFi and my tablet has no mobile data Spotify could be excluded from.

Hey @midioca,

Thanks for keeping in touch.

Could you please let us know if you're listening online or offline?

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.
