Opening Spotify forces android phone to freeze

Major problem with my spotify for Android Samsung Galaxy S7. Almost everytime I open the Spotify app it causes the phone to crash, making the phone unresponsive for several minutes. Often having to reboot the phone and try opening the app again.

Another problem possibly related to above issue. When recently opening the app and selecting a song it wont respond to the action for a few minutes. After waiting, it eventually begins to play but is still unresponsive or very slow to respond to actions such as stop/play, next song etc. No issue messages are reported.

These issues are very annoying and disruptive to using the mobile app. I have tried many fixes such as re-installing, deleting cache files, residual files, changing storage locations, updating, restarting phone, factory reseting phone,etc. 

Is this a known problem, any fixes currently available?
