Play from search fails to start playlist if phone screen is off

Play from search fails to start playlist if phone screen is off

Description

The play from search Android feature fails to start playing music in the Spotify Android app during the following scenario:

  1. Phone screen is off (or locked)
  2. Spotify is not the last app to be showing on the screen.
  3. Something performs android.media.action.MEDIA_PLAY_FROM_SEARCH with a playlist Spotify URI.

How to reproduce

  1. Stop Spotify, or play a different playlist to the one to test.
  2. Exit Spotify app (or press Home to exit).
  3. Turn screen off, or lock.
  4. Send a PLAY_FROM_SEARCH intent (either use a timer, or use a watch etc).  One easy way is to use Tasker with 3 Action steps: 1) System Lock 2) Wait for 5 seconds. 3) Send intent as in http://danny.gb.net/tasker-autoplay-spotify-playlist/   Now preview Play the actions.

What you expect to happen

Spotify starts playing the new playlist (even though phone screen is off). Useful for tasker users, or controlling from Android Wear / Android Auto.

What actually happens

The playlist does not start playing. When turning phone screen on (or unlocking) to see what has happened, the Spotify app has started to open, but no content has loaded (it is empty). See screenshot. If only one intent is attempted, I notice the content loads, and the playlist starts as soon as I turn screen on and unlock.

Reproducibility

Always 100%
