My Question or Issue

I've selected "unplayed" under the sort menu of a podcast I listen to, and whenever I leave navigate away from the podcast and then back again it has reset to "all episodes". This is really frustrating, as I listen to most podcasts from oldest to newest... and so I need to constantly click sort by unplayed again, every time I go back into that podcast.

I would rather not do a clean install of Spotify, as I've had to do it so many times already. Is this a known bug and can it be fixed?

Thank you

Hey @FreddyRod,

Thanks for posting in the thread!

As we'd like to look further into this behavior, it would be very helpful if those of you that have reported the filters resetting when accessing podcasts from the Home Page could send us the following info:

  • Device and OS-version.
  • Exact Spotify-version.
  • TS steps you've performed.

We'll be on the lookout.

Years later and this isn’t fixed.
It’s a podcast.  Maybe, just maybe (as in obviously) we want listeners to to the unplayed episodes.  That’s literally the only option that makes sense.

Hi @ivelina

I last replied to this thread on 2025-03-31 and told you that Unplayed, when set, as well as the described issue, now also was filtering away podcast episodes which was begun but not finished, major bug that made me not use Unplayed at all, forgetting a bit about this thread.

I noticed the filter sometime changed name from Unplayed to Unfinished but didn't think more of it.

Now, after avollme posted today, I checked, and now that issue is fixed again; when a podcast episode is started it is still shown when using filter Unfinished (previously Unplayed). Great!

So back to the issue of the thread:

I can still provoke this in this way:

1. Open Spotify from killed status

2. Click on a podcast under Your shows (which also is at the top "recent")

3. Here a filter sticks, it works. Setting filter to Unfinished and any ordering, going out, restarting app, still filtered.

4. But going to the podcast from the top "recent" area, here the filter doesn't apply. The ordering is applied, though. Only filter is default/not applied.

5. Fun part is, if I open a podcast from top area, no filter applied, then set a filter and/or ordering, while still not applying in the top recent area, if I go to the podcast from Your shows, this new filter applies. So it IS saved, even from Recent area, it's just not Used when opening the podcast episodes list from that area.

6. The filter and ordering also works if finding the podcast from My library or from search.

I guess right now it's only from the top recent area that has the issue, should be an easy fix?

Hey SvendK! @SvendKoustrup

Thank you for letting us know about this behaviour 🙂
We'd like to take a deeper look into it but, unfortunately, we don't have access to Google Photos, so we can't see your recording. Could you upload it to e.g. Google Drive or send us a link to an unlisted YouTube video upload instead please?

Many thanks in advance! We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

Hi Vasil, thanks for the quick reply.

What do you mean you don't have access to Google Photos? Of cause you don't have access to my account, but the link is a public shared link, which I can see if I open an Incognito session (i.e. I'm not logged in to my own Google account).

Do you mean that you, as a company, in your firewall, make it impossible for you do open links to Google Photos?

Hi @SvendKoustrup,

Thanks for the reply!

We were able to open it eventually, sorry for the back and forth! We could also reproduce the issue on our end and have reported it to our tech folks so they can investigate further.

@avollme, can you confirm if you're referring to the same issue where the filter resets when you access a podcast from the Home page? It'd be great if you can send us the Spotify version you're currently on and the make and model of your device so we can pass it on to the team as well.

Hi Dessi

Great that it worked and for the acknowledgement of what I experienced. I hope the tech folks can figure it out. If they fixed it in code tomorrow, how long are your release process, when would a new version end up in the Google play store for me to get? Just approximately.

Do say if I can do something further to help you guys.

Best regards,

SvendK

I still have this problem. Two and a half years from this post. PLEASE Spotify do something about it.

Appreciate the support, @SvendKoustrup and everyone else!

We don't have an ETA for this, but our tech folks strive to release stability & functionality patches as soon as possible.

It's a good idea to turn on automatic updates for Spotify to ensure you're always running the latest version available so you don't miss out on any potential hotfixes in the meantime.

Cheers 🤘

You "don't have an ETA" for something absolutely obvious and that has been complained about for literally years?

Just admit this is a mistake.

Multiple platforms.

iOS app 9.0.84.1339

Windows app 1.2.73.47.g7b30bb2b

Edge and Mozilla browers.

This is not an issue that needs to be reproduced.  This is a known issue, and it makes no sense.  Tell the tech people to set the default to "unplayed".  Why would it be any other way?  Why would I, by default, want to listen to podcasts that I've already listened to?  It makes literally no sense and it's been this way for years.  Fix it.

Hi ive been directed here from a similar issue. Has this really not been fixed since 2022? Its such a basic thing and its really annoying that it doesn't remember filters

Hi all. Since they changed the option from Unplayed to Not finished it has been working for me. It's been several months. Try removing cache or reinstalling the app?

Version 9.1.0.1147 on Android (Google Pixel 7 Pro)

Hi yeah it only stopped working a couple months ago. I have today fully wiped Spotify from my phone, all cache and files and then reinstalled. On first opening, it did remember the filter settings on 1 podcast. I then tried to filter several others but it didn't keep the filter on any others only thr first one I tried... so frustrating

Oh, you're right, it still doesn't work when tapping the bigger podcast icons in the top of the main page, but it do remembers it when tapping the same podcast under. Okay, fair, still very much frustrating. It would take a developer an hour to fix and ship it...

@Yordan, any insights into the progress of this? Has any developers gotten the chance to look into this? It's a bug that is front and center on the main page of your app so I would say it should receive at least some priority? And as a developer myself, without knowing your codebase , I'd say it shouldn't take long to fix?

It is a 3 years old issue, they just do not care, they have more important things to do, like how to ruin the app totally. I already moved on to Apple Music and Podcasts.

Hey everyone,

No updates at this time, I'm afraid. Rest assured this remains on our tech team's radar and we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any news to share.

The Community is just a post away if there's anything else you need assistance with in the meantime.

Thanks for the quick reply, Yordan. I would hate to be in your place. I understand your role, but as Smokin Bud writes, this is 3 years old. I guess there's a blanket over the radar? 🙂

No, it has not been fixed.  I gave up totally on Spotify about 3 years
ago.  I use Pocket Casts, free version, and I'm very happy with it. I
could see Spotify has no interest in podcasts, they should just not
offer this part at all.
