Podcast skips to random episode during playback

My Question or Issue

Sometimes when listening to a specific podcast, it will stop playback and skip to a random episode from the same podcast. It only happens on the one podcast (Lateral with Tom Scott), and not any other podcast I listen to. It is not only when playing a specific episode, and it is not always to the same episode. I have only experienced the bug when listening on data, not on wifi. I have not been able to replicate this behavior on the windows or mac desktop clients. When I resume where I was listening, it starts several minutes before the skip happened.

We'd recommend starting off with performing a clean reinstall of the app. It'll get you the latest app version with all the necessary updates and fixes and will remove any corrupted cache from previous installations. It usually helps with issues with the app's performance so give it a try.

Since you mentioned this only happening when you're using the mobile app with data and not WiFi, it's worth going to the app's settings -> Data-saving and offline -> make sure Data saver is off. Can you also check if Spotify has all the permissions to use mobile data enabled in your device's settings? 

Something else you can try is changing the APN Protocol to see if that would do the trick:

1. Search for Access Point Names in your phone's settings (the option is usually found in Network & Internet > Mobile network, but its location may vary depending on your manufacturer).
2. Select your current access point and set the APN Protocol to IPv4/IPv6.

It's also worth switching to another access point, if available, or resetting the APNs to the default from the three dots menu.

We'd also suggest asking a friend or relative to log in their own Spotify account on your phone to see if they experience the same thing. This way we can determine if it's account- or device-related.

I've just had this exact same issue, and with the same podcast! I was listening to episode 71 of the Lateral podcast, and at 16:08 minutes, right at the end of a segment, it jumped to the start of episode 72. I can only assume that this is where an ad break would go, and that the problem is somehow linked to that?

Interesting idea that it could be where an ad would go, I'll have to see next time when it happens if it's where an ad could go.

My initial thought was it had something to do with how video podcasts are handled when switching between a wifi connection and a mobile connection.
