Smart shuffle does not create a new mix/shuffle order

Smart shuffle does not create a new mix/shuffle order

Whenever I turn smart shuffle on, it does not generate a new shuffle order. It queues the exact same songs in the exact same order every time. Unlike regular shuffle which creates a new mix everytime it is turned off and on, smart shuffle queues the same exact songs. This is a very recent issue. Happens on both liked songs and playlists.

Yes there is a shuffle mode, but he always uses the same songs after the next songs.

It is not really shuffling.

If I use mayb every week the shuffle mode. Than always in the same sequnce the songs are playing

Hey folks,

If anyone's still experiencing this issue, make sure to send over your device's make, model and exact OS version, along with the exact Spotify version you're currently running. If you've already tried any troubleshooting steps, include them in your next reply.

We'll be on the lookout.

This didn’t work for me. When I shuffle my liked songs (1500 songs) I get a condensed playlist of less than 50 songs.

Hey @Jess_aspinall,

Thanks for letting us know about this.

Make sure to send us the info @Novy asked for here. That way, we can forward all this important info to the right team so they can continue investigating. Take into account you should include all the troubleshooting you've done so far.

This is still a problem for me, particularly on Liked Songs. No amount of cache clearing, reinstalling etc works.

With Liked Songs, the ONLY way I can get a new shuffled list of songs is by manually starting another song - i.e. selecting it from my Liked Songs. That generates a new list of songs to play next. But toggling Shuffle on/off does not. This also ONLY works if I select a new song with Enhanced Shuffle on. If I select a new song without, then toggle on Enhanced Shuffle, it just queues the previous list of songs.

With playlists it's much the same problem, but temperamental. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

This is also happening to me. Here's a screen recording of it.

It's very annoying, to the point where i'm no longer using spotify as my main music app but rather youtube. You guys killed the playlist radio and then you mess up this. Complete trash

I cleared cache, reinstalled, restarted PC, **bleep** I even deleted all info from the windows registry. i'm very techy. This is 100% on your side as it happens in all my devices.

I'm running windows 10, the spotify version is Spotify for Windows (64 bit) 1.2.24.756.g7a7fc7f0.

In the video im showing the exact same behaviour on two different playlists, so it's definitely not playlist related. And one was just newly created for this video test.

It's a youtube link as the video was too big for the attachments here.

Hope I cant an answer soon. I don't care to use this app without having the playlist radio nor these recommendations built into my playlist.

I tried everything that was listed here, I uninstalled the app, cleared the cache, cleared data, and tried again after a few hours. I tried everything, but I still have the same result. Whenever I turn on the normal shuffle, it is always a different shuffle and tracklist in the queue. However, if it is on smart shuffle, it is always the same tracklist in the queue. Even when I start by playing a different song, it is the same queue. I tried on my other playlists, but it is always the same result. I tried turning off smart shuffle, by going normal tracklist, then shuffle, then smart shuffle, but the same result. Is there a way to troubleshoot this problem? If there is, why is this happening?

Hi folks!

@SuahK, could you share the exact version of Spotify you're running on your phone? It's also worth checking if the issue occurs on the desktop app as well.

@Conqz, are you able to reproduce the same behavior on the mobile app?

Keep us posted!

It started to work after two days. Now, it works perfectly for me. Thanks for all your help.

Enhanced shuffle seems to be working now, transferred all my songs back to Liked Songs from playlist. Non-shuffle and regular shuffle also seem to be working, with one caveat - the first song Up Next is always the song that is my most recently liked. Strange, but I mostly use enhanced shuffle anyway so not a deal breaker.

Hey folks,

Thanks for getting back to us and letting us know.

Great news! Give us a shout if it starts misbehaving again, we'll be happy to help.

Have a good one 🙂

This has started happening to me again!

I am having similar issues as reported by the users above.

Every time I use the smart shuffle option on my Liked Songs or a playlist made out of them, the resulting playlist is the exact same one, with my songs shuffled the same way (which changes slightly every day), and with the same recommendations in the same order (exactly the same every day).

I've tried clearing the cache, logging out and in, etc., but it still happens.

The same doesn't happen in other playlists, just on my Liked Songs and a playlist made out of them.

This is on the desktop app on Windows 10, on Spotify for Windows (64 bit) 1.2.25.1011.g0348b2ea.

My Question or Issue

when playing songs within the 'liked songs' playlist/folder it appears there is a bug with the shuffle features. playing a specific song and then shutting off the shuffle feature (smart or normal) will create a queue beginning at the most recently saved song, rather than the next song in the list. cycling the shuffle features doesn't remedy the situation.

  • additionally manually adding songs to the queue from this state (play specific song -> turn shuffle off-> add song to queue) music will end after the current song finishes, and not continue to the newly added song.

solution appears to be to turn off shuffle prior to selecting any songs, which occasionally does not 'remember' to stop shuffling music

I've got the exact same issue as you described. Deleting system cache, updating Windows, booting laptop, or restarting Spotify — nothing helps. If I turn the Smart Shuffle off and then on again, the order stays the same. I am trying to play a regular playlist consisting of 677 songs, as well as other playlists, but the problem persists. (I am not trying to play the «Liked songs».)

Seems like I'm not the only one experiencing the problem, so it must be the new feature you've recently added. Still last week I was using the «Enhance playlist» which worked perfectly.

This is a YouTube link that user @conqz already posted, the behaviour in my case is exactly the same: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2EgZdqYwRk

I've been having this problem as well, what happens is that I can start a new playlist on shuffle and it will shuffle it, but after not listening for a few hours then hopping back into the playlist it is no longer shuffled, and the shuffle button won't work. I've tried restarting my phone and reinstalling the app, but it still does this.

My Question or Issue

Every time I click play on a playlist, it plays this one specific song, and the queue is the same songs every time. I tried clicking at another playlist then clicking back, but it still has the same queue. I also reinstalled spotify multiple times. The issue seems to only be there when I have enhanced shuffle on.

I'm glad I'm not alone having this problem, while everyone else I know under the premium plan is saying their Spotify is working perfectly fine. I've been experiencing this exact same problem ever since smart shuffle has been released for the first time around March of 2023, and only my Liked Songs playlist (1,202 songs since 2015) is being affected. I tried everything from deleting cache, uninstalling the app and shutting down my phone, resetting the app from home screen, but I'm still having the same issue. I had to create a new playlist and add all the songs to that playlist, but I switched back to my old Liked Songs playlist after needing to reorder each new song I add all the way to the top, which gets annoying. Months later, these issues are still occurring. At the time I was writing this reply, I tested to see if this issue also occurs on my MSI laptop Windows 11 with Spotify version 64 bit system, which to my surprise, did not occur considering how others in the replies using Windows computers had experienced the same issue.

Here's my capture of the issue.

Hi there @tatatae95,

Thanks for reaching out. Could you please provide us the following:

  • Is this on all devices or only on the Macbook?
  • When did this start happening?
  • Did you mean this only happens on specific playlists? Does it happen on newly created playlists?
  • Screenshots or a video of the behaviour

With this information, we’d be happy to investigate.

Keep us posted.

It started happening on both my iPhone and Macbook about a week ago. It happens on all my playlists including the new ones as long as I have enhanced shuffle on. I've attached a video below:
