Spotify no longer playing in call background?

I used to be able to run Spotify in the backgound of phone calls and some apps. The last week or so this hasn't been working. I can launch and sometimes hit play but the music never starts. My husband is having the same issue on his Samsung Note. I saw a lot of complaints here about Spotify not stopping during calls, was something updated and removed this feature? Is there a setting I can change to turn it back on?
