Spotify now screwed up on Android box

I quite often use Spotfy on the PC to control the version running on my android box.  The android is connected ot the TV and so it lets me play Spotify though my connected sound system.  Now it has always been very por on android boxes. It tends to assume that you are only using a touch screen and nothing else, so it's always been virtually impossible to control via a remote or display properly.  It;s now gotten even worse as it only displays at a 90 degree angle and the control is totally useless. Am I missing something? Is there some way to correct this that gives me alternative settings and access?
