Stop automatically playing on BT speakers

I searched for answers but only found people wanting their app to automatically play, but I want mine to stop.  Whenever I'm near a recognized Bluetooth device my app resumes playing a podcast (and if there aren't any new downloads it picks a random old episode).  For example: I get in my vehicle and once my phone connects it will play.  I'll stop it, close the app, but then it'll play again whenever I get a phone call or text.  It's not only annoying but also causes a problem when it's starts to play something I would rather not have my kids hearing.
