local files won't download on phone (android)

I have a few songs that I wanted to add to my library that are not on spotify.

I have mp3 files on my computer and are accessible/playable through the desktop app.

I have added these to a playlist so I can download and access them on my mobile. but it is not working?

details:

all files are unprotected mp3s, most downloaded from youtube so some have incomplete file info. both devices are connected on the same WiFi, and I have followed the instructions about syncing local files.

on the desktop app, all song titles are displaying, album and artist names are greyed out. they are playable but I can't save them to my library (no plus button showing)

on the mobile app, I can view the playlist and all the songs, but they are all completely greyed out and I cannot play, or download them. If I switch on download, it just says that they are downloaded, but obviously not since I can't play them...
