must wifi or mobile data be on to listen to spotify?

Do you have to have wifi or mobile data running when listening to spotify? I've noticed in the car I have to have mobile data on otherwise the sound is quiet and echoes.

I have downloaded songs to phone but makes no difference.

no that shouldn't be right, if you have Premium and set songs to Sync offline then you shouldn't need mobile data or WiFi to play them.

Sometimes, for me anyway) It won't go offline but stays in a state of initilsation. And my starred playlist which is offline is blank until I connect.
