[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

Hi

Thanks for that.
Don’t cancel just yet…I believe Spotify are about to have legal action taken against them.
It can’t come too soon!

The embedding of ads in podcasts is starting to become the norm and it really creates a need for an AI option to auto-skip the ad content. We pay for premium because we hate ads, and having to (pull over to the side of the road) and (angrily) skip these things manually every time interrupts the listening experience and also often skips part of the content.

I suggest Spotify introduces an optional auto-skip 3rd party spam feature before the competition does.

I fully agree.
However, given that Spotify will be purchasing the broadcasting rights (probably by number of streams) they simply need to tell the first party (the podcasters) that they will not purchase unless they’re ad free podcasts. It’s REALLY easy to edit out embedded ads, so I don’t accept the argument that “the podcasts come with ads from the podcasters”
That’s just nonsense.
The way I see it, the podcasters are being paid twice:
Once by their advertisers
And again by Spotify for the rights to stream.
(But of course, it’s US who’s paying!)
And we’re supposed to accept this?
It’s a disgrace.

Anyway, best wishes all

Spotify's ads on podcasts are extremely annoying.  These are not the same style of ads on most podcasts.  I can handle ads, but these are extra loud, and grating like the 90s Nickelodeon frenetic assault to the senses.  If you're going to make premium subscribers have to ensure ads please use your power to force the ad agencies to switch it up.  I listen to Spotify a lot less than I would otherwise and seriously consider dumping it all together because of how annoying, and at times, rage inducing they are.

Spotify are an absolute disgrace.
Inserting ads into their premium service is bad practice at best and an possibly illegal breach of terms.
I can’t be bothered listening to podcasts anymore, just too annoying and as you’ve said, it spoils the listening experience.

I am currently subscribed to the Spotify Premium Family plan, which should provide an ad-free listening experience. However, since this weekend, I have noticed that while listening to podcasts, specifically "Gemischtes Hack," I am being forced to listen to non-skippable ads. These ads are separate from the podcast audio track and are displayed textually and visually in the track section of the playlist, as shown in the attached screenshots.

This issue is contradictory to the benefits promised by the Premium Family subscription. I have ensured that my subscription is active and have taken steps such as updating the app and logging out and back in, but the issue persists.

Could you please investigate this matter and provide a solution to ensure I can enjoy an uninterrupted, ad-free experience as per the subscription terms?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi

Thanks for your input.
It would appear Spotify are in breach of their contract including ads.
In the US there’s a few lawsuits against them in the making I believe.
Spotify’s response is either silence, or that they can’t do anything about them, which is of course nonsense.
Please take this to social media if you use a platform…it’s the only way we’ll get treated fairly.

Well it does, now that Spotify plays videos through my guess would be YouTube who probably forces them anyway because they can... I'm not paying for ads! Unbelievable that video is the default option on Spotify for Android TVs!
Sucks that it doesn't remember my selected source, I prefer simply audio as sometimes YT has low quality or simply different versions of the track you want to listen to!

Fix two things:

- a default option for audio or video selection on Android TVs
- figure out a way to get rid of ads in videos! BECAUSE IT'S INFURIATING!!!!!!!
