[Social] Bring back Inbox/Messaging with Notifications

The Inbox/Messaging feature did not get a real shot at even being a feature because Spotify took away notifications for new messages. Give Inbox/Messaging some development so users can continue to privately share songs.

Updated on 2025-08-27

Hi everyone,

We're excited to announce that this feature is making a return! 😎 The new revamped Messages lets users share content directly with friends inside the Spotify app and instantly start a conversation about it.

This post goes more in-depth on the topic, make sure to check it out!

Thanks for helping us make Spotify better 💚

"gussykins" if you read this: we never shared alternative ways to communicate, never thought spotify would do this without notification. (Don't trust swedish companies). but it's lost, we can only hope those nuts put it back in use. They always "upgrade" and everytime it's an unnecessary or destructive outcome.

Need to be able to share music in App. I don't want to be opening up FB messenger or Whatsapp etc in work, I just want to be able to listen to music in app

Hey Spotify, I've loved you for years now. I am writing to express how greatly I valued, and used, the messaging/inbox feature that seems to be no longer an option with the current Spotify format. I had a lot of music I shared with friends and family that I wanted to keep tabs on that was documented in my messages. I also enjoyed being able to coverse about the shared music simply via Spotify Messenger. I used this method of communication before and after my account turned to Premium. I am now disappointed with no longer having access to those conversations and artists' info. Please consider this a another tack on to return the Spotify Messenger feature. Thank you for your time. -Blackalociousopal

Hello Spotify and the Community,

Just want to start by saying I love Spotify, and that, with the risk of sounding super corny, it seriously has enriched my life in so many ways. I especially love the "Discover weekly" playlist!

I will usually never comment anything online, but here, I did feel that it might be worth saying that, I understand if you really need to get rid of this feature (because it's too much work in proportion to the usage), but might it not be worth bringing it back and perhaps promoting it better instead? I think if more people knew about this private option, they would use it. Personally, I often have a person in mind when I want to share a song, and don't want to post it to any and all potential followers...

It was a great feature, and I will miss it, even if there are ways of getting around it (sending link as a message -> no history + outside of app). Also, I was sad to see that all the conversations were gone - is there any way to recover the conversations and songs in the inbox?

I hope you will consider bringing the feature back, but nonetheless: thank you for all your wonderful work!

I was really dissapointed when i realized this feature was gone .. Actually thought it was a bug at first.

Please bring back private messaging! For me and my friends, it always was one of the spotify key features.

I am quite upset at the removal of this feature.  I use it to regularly share my music finds with like minded music people and am not interested in posting this publicly through facebook / twitter / any other social media device.

I do not need the facility to create a chat window and have full bnlown conversations with people but sharing music will only encourage more people to listen to mroe music.  Surely that has to be a positive thing for the artists and spotify.

I'd also like this feature back. First of all I already have quite a history of albums / songs I've excahnged with friends.

Second, I see this as a really neat, private way of exchanging good music, kind of like borrowing your friend a record in the old days. Most of the time I don't want to push these recommendations to each of my Spotify followers.

I also think that the main reason people didn't use this feature more is due to it not being very prominent in the UI. E.g. I had difficulty noticing the green button signalling that I have a new message. It's not as prominent as the, say, red Google+ notifications I can't not see on Google products, even though I don't use Google+ any more. There was no email notification either to help.

Status changed to: Case Closed

Hey folks, we've come back to update this idea status as 'Case Closed'. The inbox feature was recently deprecated within the Spotify app, a necessary but difficult decision that we made after a lot of careful consideration. This feature had extremely low engagement with users and it took a lot of manpower to keep it going.

It's still easy to share and chat about music from your Spotify. Check out this FAQ about Sharing Music. We're also currently working on new and improved ways to share music and will take this as feedback into the process. So look out for improvements on our Spotify News blog.

Thanks everyone.

This thread is so popular that it clutters my inbox with notifications! One of the only times this is acceptable.

It is so Simple Spotify - PHASE 1:

  1. I want to create collaborative lists.
  2. I want to remain the owner. I may want to transfer ownership to another Spotify User.
  3. I want to allow some users to EDIT (Some Spotify Users I choose).
    1. Those users can add, delete, reorder songs within the list
  4. I want to allow some users to VIEW (public,Some Spotify Users)

That shouldn't be hard... 😉 And this does build Spotify as a social place where we can share music tastes, in private rooms.

Thanks

Hi Spotify, I think the app could take advantage of a unique social opportunity presented by the digital platform. In the physical world, it's easy to create a CD playlist and hand it to your friend. I think Spotify should digitize this: there should be a function for creating a playlist and sending it to someone, rather than changing the privacy setting on a playlist to public. It would introduce a social aspect to Spotify, in which you can share music or playlists directly to friends (accounts). As an example, one could create a plays list for a friend, and then send that friend the playlist, where it would appear in an inbox. This would add a new social feature to Spotify, where friends can send and share music from a direct user-to-user interface. This makes sharing music and playlists more personal and directed than merely making a playlist collaborative. The playlists could be set by the sender who could control the receivers ability to add/modify the tracks in the playlist. Essentially, it would introduce a more social and personal aspect to Spotify and provide a new, more direct way to connect users through music.
