[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

I am getting ads on premium as well, and it is NOT a bug. It is a ~feature~!

This is called "Enshittification", (2023 word of the year)  which is the online industry standard nowadays. Basically, they are making their own services gradually worse to make more money from the paid users. Uber, Meta, Spotify all these big **bleep** companies are making it.

Want your food to be delivered faster? pay priority delivery.

Want to listen music AND podcasts ad free? expect a new premium membership

My Question or Issue

I am suddenly hearing ads on a strictly ad-free podcast. I understand that ads may be read, or dynamically inserted by podcasts when they choose to advertise. However, this podcast (Uhh Yeah Dude) is specifically and deliberately ad-free since 2006. They have certainly not enabled ads.

In the past few days, Spotify (and only Spotify) has been inserting ads for various things like McDonalds into this podcast – something I'm sure the creators would definitely have not sanctioned, and would not approve of.

Note: The podcast in question did recently start taking advantage of the video podcast feature, and I wonder if Spotify has decided to begin running ads to recoup the cost of the video feature (the ads began about the same time as the video feature was enabled for this podcast).

Regardless, ads should not be run for podcasts without their consent, and certainly not for premium subscribers – given that the podcast has purposefully never enabled ads.

Is it Spotify policy to run ads regardless of creators preferences? Are ads in any way connected to the enabled video feature?

Hi there @AnotherMax,

Thanks for your reply.

While Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship messages. They can be or not related to the content you're listening to. However, neither you or you Family plan members should have ads when listening to music.

Poor move, Spotify. Pay podcasters more and ban ads for those who pay for a premium account! At least the ads added in the local language, this is totally unfair on your part. If this continues, I'll switch to another platform in a month, and so will all my friends and family. What a bad service.

My Question or Issue

I am a confirmed Premium account holder but I still get ads directly from Spotify interrupting my podcasts and after podcasts end. I am using the Desktop app for Spotify. These are ads directly from Spotify the advertiser interrupting the play of the podcast. They are not ad reads or host endorsed ads inserted into the runtime of the podcast. I cannot skip these ads as it says "Your podcast will continue after the break" so I am forced to listen to the ad in full in order to continue listening to the podcast or listen to the next one. The issue started yesterday after having no previous issues with this and it still persists today after troubleshooting. I have confirmed my Premium plan is still active and that I am listening as a Premium user. I have updated the desktop app to the latest version. I have logged out of Spotify and back in. None of the above has changed anything. I pay for Spotify Premium monthly in order to listen to music and podcasts without interruption, and now the only podcast I use Spotify for is being treated as if I am not a Premium user.

I think I'm going to start using BBC sounds to listen to podcasts from now on, even with the limitations of only BBC shows. The shoe horning of adverts in every possible way to podcasts ruins the experience. What with the podcaster's themselves promoting sponsored products I feel like I'm listening to one long ad break.

What's with embedded ads in some podcasts? And some content creators having locked content for ad free episodes. Why should premium account holders have to pay twice for no ads? There are other platforms for paid content.

Ads should not be streamed during podcasts for premium members. The subscription cost has recently increased with little to no benefit to the user. The ads are incredibly disruptive and make paying for the subscription a waste of money

I quit listening to podcasts on Spotify, but my kids listen to story podcasts when they go to sleep. Getting s lot ads that are not at all suitable for children with those. I am now seriously considering quitting Spotify completdly, having been a user since 2010 and a paid user for most of the years since. This is literally bs! I won't listen to excuses about this.

op1umofthepeople

just to say here that im not making any excuses im just giving you some knowledge on the fact spotify said ads are an integral part of podcasts.
