[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

I guess these bastards think that "oooh, we don't FORCE our ads on podcasts, we just GIVE the creators an option to roll the ads for them, that's different!". A bunch of mоrons.
I really hate what spotify has become. That's the F reason why adblocks exist! You get too greedy, so there's no damn reason to pay for your stupid service.

PS: check the last paragraph.

The only way to force them to stop this dreadful advertising service, despite having premium accounts, is to leave Spotify en masse. I will do this, but I doubt many others will, and that’s the problem. If many people don’t leave, nothing will change, or it might even get worse.

I am about to complain to the UK Consumer group ‘WHICH?’
Will be interesting to see if anything becomes of it.

I pay for Family Premium to not have ads. I am fine with "within podcast host read or plays ads", but it is not cool to now have these advertisements where the podcast stops playing and separate advertisement starts playing. I couldn't even find it on the phone playing, like it was playing outside the spotify app or something. I "close all running aps", but the ad still was playing. I had to swipe down from the top and there was a little notification app showing an advertisement playing. I clicked on the info bubble "Why am I seeing this ad" and it says "This advertiser wants to reach anyone on Spotify"... oh really?
I want to reach ANY advertisers on my Premium Spotify app and kindly say no, if you play ads on my "ad free" account, I will put in a tiny amount of effort to cancel my account and setup alternatives to what I listen to.

Update minutes just after making this post: I notice I have to pay my credit card balance, what do you know just this month Spotify is increasing my Family Premium account from 17 bucks to 20 bucks a month! So you are going to now charge me more and also now start making me listen to ads? Really? Now I will be determined to cancel and get alternative for myself and my family.

Hello
That’s really interesting. I appreciate you’re ok with podcast ads within the cast inserted by the creator, but that’s still not correct.
But to be fair, Spotify are already paying their creators for the rights to stream their work. Therefore, ALL ads should be edited out with no exception.
Otherwise, the creators are receiving twice the advertising revenue. (At our expense btw) Nice work if you can get it!
It’s a disgrace that they can get away with this, I’m currently looking for an alternative ad-free streamer.

I don't like the denial of responsibility by Spotify. To say they cannot do anything about it and that it is in the hands of the podcaster is disingenuous. Spotify has chosen to enable podcasters to earn add revenue on premium members as an alternative to having to offer some of the subscription fee revenue to the podcasters. This is a conscious choice of a corporation run with the mindset that revenues need to grow every year so if the market or market share is not growing quick enough they need to squeeze some revenue out elsewhere. So they test the ads on premium customers and it appears (in the short term) to work as a negligible percentage of premium members cancel their subscription. So the project manager and senior management get their bonuses. But the ads do not go unnoticed. There is an immediate impact: loss of brand loyalty. This opens up the market for a disruptive new entry and before Spotify can blink a tipping point occurs and Spotify is left fighting for survival. If you are thinking of switching to Apple Music I can offer you one other selling point: Apple is way ahead on running their servers on renewable energy. And when it comes to streaming, energy counts.

Hello, it is unfortunately not a bug. Spotify has indicated that their Premium "ad-free" plan only extends to their music side of things. Podcasts are not under that umbrella, and therefore you will get ads when you listen to your favourite content creators. That also depends on whether or not the content creators have flicked their monetization ads button to ON.
To summarize, if you're looking for ad-free podcasts here on Spotify, it's not happening and it won't happen. People have flagged this issue for, from what i can gather, 1-2 years now and Spotify has not done anything about this. It will likely be best if you can switch platforms (maybe YT Premium?).

Lastly, if you're wondering if there's been any mention about the "ad-free" premium subscription not covering podcasts? Yes, they included a sentence in the end user agreement. One might call it an afterthought after reading it, but let's be real. Their lawyers probably made them include it to avoid lawsuits.

Hope this helps.

The reason I moved from Apple to Spotify was because Apple iTunes said if you own the cd's and their system for checking at the time approved it you would have access to the music. Well they **bleep** us over and changed that and I had gotten rid of my cds so I didn't have access to the music. Apple might make hardware that stands up to the test of time, but they don't support it with operating systems. I have a fully function iPad mini first edition that is no longer supported. And an Apple TV device that no longer lets me login. Apple screws us too.

I also just got a bonafide Spotify ad while trying to listen to a podcast episode.. not one included in the ep, a Spotify ad. i tried closing and opening the app, changing the thing I was listening to but it kept playing the same **bleep**ing ad

It’s getting worse, does Spotify have a plan to overcome this issue with podcast creators using third-party ads?
