[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

My Question or Issue

I have an account spotify premium which is supposed not to have publicity. However every time after I listen a podcast, I've got a publicity of Shopify... every time. It doesn't  matter when the podcast are long, however I recently start to listen short podcast (3min) and It is starting to get annoying.

I don't know why even if I'm paying a Spotify premium in France I'm still listening this publicity.

On Android device I use "Antenna Pod" that I got from F-Droid store.  You can set custom skip button durations, download episodes, sync between devices (Gpodder implementation).  It's my way of giving the proverbial finger to advertisements.  I'm a huge proponent of ad blocking online due to its invasiveness and obnoxiousness.  There is no Google, Apple or Microsoft in my life.  Spotify may next go away.

Old post from 2022, still sounding off!

Easy fix -

Any podcast who CHOOSES to utilize ads (to be able to live off their podcasts )lucky them,

Should be told at the door

"You have the right to utilize ads, HOWEVER we unfortunately rely on our customer base, without them, we have no Spotify.

Therefore, your podcast can only be streamed at  the lower subscription level, and NOT streamed on the "No ads" Subscription level, because we value our customers and it's only fair. "

Problem solved, we're not splitting the Atom here.

It's wrong, it's without merit, and it's a slap in the face to premium subscribers.

It's why I personally left paid streaming services on my television viewing aka Hulu, YouTube, etc..

I have plenty. I don't need them.

If my streaming was primarily podcasts, I'd leave.

I strictly am "my library " kinda girl.

I'd never tolerate it.

The volume of ads in podcasts on Spotify is so out of control, now with pop-ups to subscribe etc. if I pay premium I expect to not hear ads, this needs to be fixed now that it’s so out of control or you will start losing subscribers at alarming rates.

You are giving podcasters and content "creators" more power to make money than the talented musicians who built your platform in the first place.

Half of them aren't even content creators.

Example: I was looking for some motivational podcasts this morning and after 3 minutes of super UN-motivating ads about flu medicine and other things, I find the content "creator" has just ripped a soundbite of some celebrity.

This isn't content creation, it's purely Ad SPAM and you should have better quality control over the content if you're going to give them the right to "choose" to run ads for themselves... Despite us paying premium.

Hi,

I am a Spotify Premium customer, and yet I am currently getting ads from Spotify during podcasts, as well as the usual ads from podcasters (which I was prepared for) but I now get the actual Spotify ads which stops my podcast more than 2 times during one episode. I checked whether my Premium subscription was changed, but no, nothing has changed there, so why am I getting ads from Spotify on my Premium account?

Many thanks in advance.

It doesn't seem any of the responders from spotify are actually listening.  I've been having this same issue and only in the past month. I've had premium for years. I listen to podcasts regularly and can definitely discern the difference between ads that are input into the podcast by the creator vs spotify ads. These are spotify ads and to make it worse,  after it finishes and another one plays and then another.... it won't let me play the actual podcast until I've restarted the app SEVERAL times. I am

I recently got back into podcasts again after not listening to them for a long time, and cue my surprise and absolute fury at the start of the podcasts I listen to have localized ads directly related to my current location, despite the fact they don't live anywhere even close to me. Please for the love of god remove those ads from podcasts for premium users, I am very aware you can, and we are paying you to NOT give us ads. It's called "Spotify Premium", not "Spotify Music Premium".

Here is an example: I am listening to "MrCreepyPasta's Storytime", an entirely English podcast, and from what I know, localized in an English-speaking country. There, every 20 minutes and at the start and end of the podcast episode are Norwegian ads bypassing my Spotify Premium subscription, which is still being paid for.

Now, I would like your opinion and reasons as to why this is a thing in the first place. It is painfully obvious that you, the creators of the program in the first place, have full, total control over everything going on in the app. You can remove, modify and even add content in the app. So removing the function to listen to ads on an automatically generated section on a podcast should not be an issue.

I have been thinking this from the start.

My idea is to demand podcasters to have an ad-free version of their podcast for premium users. I, as a premium user personally find repeated ads in the podcasts really annoying and unnecessary. I'm paying basically to have ad-free music and believe this should apply to podcasts also.
