[All Platforms] No Ads in Podcasts for Spotify Premium users

I pay for my subscription. Every month for years now. The main reason I am a paid-for subscriber with Spotify is so I don't have to hear ads. As I have shifted my podcast listening from other providers to Spotify to bypass ads, both from the platform as well as integrated into the content.

I expect not to hear ads on Spotify. I understand there are ads woven into the actual content of the podcast itself, but for as big of a company and the amount of leverage Spotify has, I expect to not hear ads so long as I am paying for the service.

I reached out to Spotify and got this lazy, generic answer from Joy in Spotify Customer Support: “if you're hearing ads on podcasts using this Premium account. It's possible that the podcaster integrated that ads to their podcast content”. Thanks for breaking your back on that response.

I KNOW what the ads I’m hearing are. And I understand they can’t ask podcasters to export two versions, one with integrated ads and one without. What I expect from Spotify is to either implement metadata that tags the beginning and ending of ad segments and bypass them for us, Premium subscribers, or require podcasters to give metadata timecodes that Spotify can identify to bypass them AUTOMATICALLY.

Just to be clear, even if these identifiers are put into the content, I don’t want to have to pull my phone out to hit any sort of “skip ads” button. This is literally the ONLY reason users have Premium. So get rid of the ads. It’s actually very simple. And let’s not get started on how archaic it is to continually hit the “15sec forward” button to bypass the ads, first over shooting, then undershooting the duration of the integrated ad, only to have to make peace with hearing the last ten seconds of the ad. At that point it’s not servicing either party in the transaction.

It’s 2020. You are a huge company with a lot of leverage and a huge developer budget. I honestly can’t believe I’m even having to write this suggestion.

tl:dr - Spotify, I am a Premium member. You made a promise to me that if I became a Premium member, I wouldn’t hear ads. I’m hearing ads on podcasts. Integrated or not, I don’t care. You have the technology and power to fix it. So fix it. And make it automatic. It’s 2020.

Hey folks,

The Ideas section provides users with the opportunity to share their opinion on what features and app improvements can be developed, to make Spotify better. This idea however, in it's core fundamentals, requires to change how the Premium subscription works and what opportunities Spotify offers to Podcast creators.

As part of the Premium subscription, all music can be enjoyed ad-free. And while Spotify doesn’t play ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers, some podcasts may include advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship independently of the streaming platforms featuring such podcasts.

Providing a way to circumvent those is not something that our Idea submission process can accomplish.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it on to the relevant teams.

Please do note, that we do understand the overall sentiment and if the thread stops being useful as a source to track constructive feedback, we will need to close it for further replies.

All the best!

Hey there @Vonplaf,

Thanks for reaching out about this and welcome to the Community. We'll be happy to shed some light on this 🙂

Spotify doesn’t play or include ads that interrupt the music listening experience of Premium subscribers. However, some podcast creators may include third-party advertising, host-read endorsements, or sponsorship messages in their episodes.

Regarding the language of the ads - it's normal to get ads in the local language of the country your current IP address is coming from.

We hope this clears things up. If you need anything else, give us a shout.

I have a premium account and when I start some podcasts I get ads in my national language "Danish" but the Podcast is in English and after the ads that Spotify have put into the start of the podcast I also have to listen to about 1-1½ min of ads from the podcast company.
STOP this Spotify, I pay for not hearing ads and you still stuff them into the podcasts.

"Spotify gives the podcast hosts the option to choose if they would like to have a dynamic ad slot in their podcast, but that isn't something Spotify can control - it's up to the individual podcast owners if they choose to have that type of ad in their content."

There is a problem with this copy paste response:

"Spotify gives the podcast hosts the option"

"that isn't something Spotify can control"

Please stop insulting the intelligence of customers. You know we pay not to hear ads. yet "(you) give the podcast hosts the option to choose if they would like to have a dynamic ad slot in their podcast"

You are breaching customer trust in an egregious way and this repeated copy paste response does not cover it.

This must be a constant topic. Is there any reflection within Spotify about the effect this breach of trust (I won't say breach of contract as no doubt there is some tiny sentence about it hidden in the Ts & Cs)  has on your customer base?

Today I had to listen to a French ad for food delivery in the middle  - literally mid sentence - of my English language podcast.  I don't live in France, haven't been there in 20 years and don't speak French.

After 5 years, this, combined with the disinterested response from Spotify, is what's going to make me cancel my sub.

Nope ... spotify is in total control of this and is able to make this right so we get what we pay for.
We pay for a subscription to avoid ads there for as spotify gives podcasters the option to bypass this, spotify have violated the subscription that we pay for.

Hi there folks,

Thank you for your replies and feedback.

What we mean is that we provide this option to podcast creators as an extra way to help them monetize and live off of their content. As this is a good way to support content creators we don't plan on taking this feature away from them at the moment and we also don't enforce any mandates on who wants to activate it or not.

This doesn't mean that your feedback isn't heard and that this request couldn't be fulfilled by some other means in the future. On the contrary, this is being monitored and we invite everyone to share their opinion in a constructive manner. We will then ensure to pass it onto the relevant teams.

We hope this information was helpful.

Let us know if we can help you with anything else.

Take care!

Vonplaf
The Give us the premium users the option to opted out of that feature for the podcasters, then the users can decide if they wanna accept the extra ads from the podcasters.
At the moment I am getting approx. 2 extra min of ads on top of the baked in ads the podcasters are doing during a podcast.
And again by allowing this feature for the podcasters spotify is not giving the users the ad free content that they are paying for.
Vonplaf
Why should I submit something for spotify to implement when its entirely a problem that spotify have created and is not willing to provide the ad free content that premium subscribers are paying for ??

But from now on when ever I am listing to a podcast that uses that system (easy to spot when all my podcasts are in english and the ads all out of the blue are in danish) I will no longer listen to that podcast.
So Spotify by having this feature for the podcasters you are driving users from your platform and driving users away from listing to the podcasters that use your feature..
Or you could just give ud the ad-free content that we pay for and exclude premium users from being affected by that feature you gave the podcasters.

I did a test today on a podcast from iheartradio (Techstuff) and the extra ads I get added up to 4½ extra min of ads on top of the 4 min of ads they have baked in to their 45 min long podcast.
Spotify, thats 4½ min of ads I payed you for not sending my way but you did it any way.

It's ridiculous how many threads have been closed with high rankings for this idea.

Your COMMUNITY doesn't want excuses, Spotify, we want results.

Premium members are paying you a high amount MONTHLY to listen to music ad-free. WE understand the ads are not coming from you, but you are a music goliath, with tons of money and enough IT/tech people to figure something out.

Find a way to have ads removed during the upload for premium users. Or, throw it to the creator's responsibility that they must send you TWO versions - one for people with ads, one for the premium users, or their content won't get produced. I don't know, I don't work in this industry at all but I'm pretty sure there is a solution available and you shouldn't need users to be asking you for years to do this.

We pay for an ad-free experience. We don't care how the ads get there, or how they are removed, they should just simply be removed.

Do you need all your premium users to cancel for a month as a strike in order to listen to us?  I mean this is just pure negligence from a customer-experience perspective. TONS of people have written in about this already and all you do is close the thread and say it's not something that can be solved in the community. WELL THEN FIGURE OUT A WAY TO SOLVE IT... IT'S YOUR JOB, RIGHT? 🙂

THANKS IN ADVANCE, KINDLY!

COMMUNITY - COMMENT BELOW, AND IF THIS DOESN'T WORK I'D SAY WE WILL HAVE TO START A PETITION AND A DAY TO CANCEL OUR PREMIUM ACCOUNTS UNTIL THE COMPANY WILL DECIDE TO TAKE SOME ACTION ON THIS HEAVILY-DOCUMENTED COMPLAINT.

I contacted customer support about this. I thought it must be some issue, like my account wasn't registered fully as premium or something... But no. Inserted ads in podcasts by design! I have no issue with small creators having sponsors or reading ads at the start, end or during breaks. Squarespace, blueapron, Raid, etc are basically genre-tropes at this point XP  BUT! Why is Spotify adding additional ads?!

Spotify invested money and dev time into a system for adding dynamic ads and decided that those ads should also be played for premium users despite spending a DECADE telling us to buy premium to avoid ads?! Showing adds inn whilly-nilly in the middle of sentences?! I tried listening to a trailer for "the Magnus Archives". 30 second of content, 30 seconds of XYZ presents, and OVER 2 MINUTES OF NORWEGIAN ADS!

I envy your resilience towards ads, but I definitely don't have that.

If a product has ads, I don't use it. I have absolutely zero tolerance towards people trying to put things in my head that I didn't consent to.

If the music section of spotify starts with this, I'm gone the same day.
