New version from Debian repo requires GLIBC_2.38

New version from Debian repo requires GLIBC_2.38

After updating spotify-client to the latest version 1.2.77.358.g4339a634 from https://repository.spotify.com stable/non-free application won't launch:

./spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by ./spotify)

This is a problem, because a lot of Linux systems use GLIBC 2.36 (Debian stable, Ubuntu LTS, POP_OS! LTS) and do not have this version.

The only option for many Linux users for now is to stay on the older version (or use flatpack)

Regards!

I updated my system and just got the same error.

Using Debian 12

Same here on Mint. No longer working as of this morning.

~$ ldd --version
ldd (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.35-0ubuntu3.11) 2.35
~$ spotify
spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by spotify)
spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by spotify)

Same problem with Ubuntu 22.04

Same here on KDE Neon. I updated `spotify-client` this morning.

$ ldd --version
ldd (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.35-0ubuntu3.11) 2.35
$ spotify
spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by spotify)
spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by spotify)
$ ls -l /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2220400 Sep 17 23:26 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
$ ls -l /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 940560 Sep 17 23:26 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6

I'm seeing this on Ubuntu 22.04 this morning as well. What a nice way to start the day 🙂

Does Spotify even test their builds before releasing them to the world? Sloppy

Same in Mint 21.3

$ cat /etc/os-release
NAME="Linux Mint"
VERSION="21.3 (Virginia)"

At least the unofficial Flatpak version still works. I'm wondering if/when that'll stop working, too.

Same deal here, I'm on glibc 2.35. Hoping for a downgrade, but the web client works fine for me in the meantime 😉 especially since this is a labor of love, gotta be patient for these devs: they have a lot on their plates already.

Same issue here. After latest Spotify update, at the launch app moment, it never starts and logs shows the following error:

spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by spotify)
spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by spotify)

I forgot to mention the OS is Debian 12 6.1.0-41-amd64

The snap from the "stable" channel on Ubuntu also works. Will have to do until they fix the main release (or the distro catches up, whatever comes first)

I'm having the same issue as well, hope this gets fixed, it looks like people are talking about the same issue over on Reddit as well.

It's broken on LMDE 6 "Faye" as well (not surprising since it's based on Debian 12). Really disappointing that this breaking change was rolled out without warning (honestly, it should never have been made available to Bookworm-derived distributions) and frustratingly I can't roll back (reinstalling the older version from the Faye repo crashes now with a core dump and I lack the skills to debug it).

same issue, same error message, Ubuntu 22.04.5

~$ spotify

spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by spotify)

~$ ldd --version
ldd (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.35-0ubuntu3.11) 2.35

 Same problem happening to me i'm using pop os 22.04

It's broken for me as well.

It's a nightmare – please provide the older version again: spotify-client_1.2.74.477.g3be53afe_amd64.deb

Having the same issue here.
