Hi, fellow penguin fans!
Today we've pushed version 0.9.11.26 of the Linux desktop client to our public repo. Just update your system!
General release notes: http://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Mac-and/Release-Notes-Spotify-for-Desktop-0-9-11/...
Linux specific changes:
- collectionCache.bnk is no longer written to $HOME
Known issues:
- It still doesn't work to drag from an HTML5 view to a legacy view (such as the sidebar).
- On first start, the HTML5 views may not appear (just empty black views), try restarting the app if it happens
- Some users have reported problems with the new track change notifications. If you experience problems, you can start the client with "spotify --ui.track_notifications_enabled=false", or you can edit the file called ~/.config/spotify/Users/<your-spotify-username>-user/prefs and add a line with "ui.track_notifications_enabled=false". Sorry for not having this option available in the UI.
- No 32-bit build is available
- This build is not compatible with debian squeeze or wheezy
If you don't already have the Linux client installed, install like this:
# 1. Add our repository. As root or with sudo, create # a file called /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list and add # "deb http://repository.spotify.com/stable non-free" to it. # Here's a one-liner: sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://repository.spotify.com/stable non-free" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list' # 2. If you want to verify the downloaded packages, # you will need to add our public key sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 94558F59 # 3. Run apt-get update sudo apt-get update # 4. Install spotify! sudo apt-get install spotify-client You don't have a debian based system? Well, it's still possible to get things running. Either you convert the debian package to something else using alien, or you can just download and extract the stuff you need from the package. There is no need to install the client, it can be run from anywhere. # 1. Get the right filename SPOTIFY_DEB=http://repository-origin.spotify.com/pool/non-free/s/spotify/spotify-client_0.9.11.26.g995ec04.78-1_`uname -m | sed s/x86_64/amd64/ | sed s/i686/i386/`.deb # 2. Download the package wget repository.spotify.com/pool/non-free/s/spotify/$SPOTIFY_DEB # 3. Extract the required parts ar p $SPOTIFY_DEB data.tar.gz | tar -zx --strip-components=3 ./opt/spotify/spotify-client # 4. Go in to the extracted folder cd spotify-client # 5. Setup symlinks to libs (NOTE: this script assumes Fedora 17, edit to suit your needs) ./linklibs-fedora.sh # 6. Optionally register icons and menu item # Note: for the menu item to work, you need to ensure # spotify is in your $PATH, either by symlinking # it from /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin, or by adding # the spotify-client folder to your $PATH ./register.sh

When using the KDE desktop and turning off the computer, after turning it on again, spotify gives the error "-session not supported" and will not start automatically on startup. Could you make Spotify Linux ignore this argument when it is launched? Thanks

That's because you configured KDE to restore the previous session. It then adds this option to every program it starts.
Maybe you could set this to "start with empty session" (or similar, don't have the exact wording in my mind) and start everything you want by adding it to autostart settings.
A possible alternative that I did not try myself: You could write a spotify wrapper script that strips this option passed by KDE. If you're not used to bash scripting, then this might be not trivial to you, tho.
EDIT: Another option would be to leave the setting to "restore last session", but exclude spotify from this. There is a input field for excluding programs. Then only add spotify to autostart and you should always have spotify started, but all other programs will be restored like they were running at shutdown.
I'm waiting too for the 32 bits version. I hope they do.
The wrapper script is a good idea. For a temporal workaround, though. I don't want to remove the autostart session option in KDE - it is useful as a whole. It would be better that spotify was fully compatible with KDE's options.
Thanks!
Guys, give your kudus to this idea that suggest a official version for Spotify on Linux.

I wish there was some sort of bug tracker for the Linux client (Linux only bugs). The way it is now is basically chaos where bugs are reported in this thread and other threads, and quickly disappear into a black hole. Some times there is a response from the devs, usually not, so it's impossible to know if it has been noted, and it is certainly impossible for the devs to go back and look for reported bugs when they're working on the Linux client. So unless the devs experience the bugs themselves I don't think they have a big chance getting fixed.
Now I know the Linux client is "low priority", so we can't expect every minor bug to be fixed. I propose a bug tracker, where we can report bugs that are exclusive to the Linux client (only bugs that are not in the Windows/Mac version), and we can vote on them, so that the devs can see what bugs are annoying most users, and fix them if possible. There are many online tools for this. Maybe Spotify have their own we can use.
I hope the devs see this and that it doesn't disappear into the black hole.
Any word on why updates for the Linux version is being stalled again? 0.9.13 has been out for some time now for windows. I thought that they fixed the build problems that caused the delays last time. (at least for the 64-bit version)
If you guys have a Windows or OS X PC, I recommend you try the new Beta and ask for official Linux support in the Feedback mechanism! The Beta seems to be largely based (even more than the previous) on web technologies running in a Chromium frame. This should make Linux support easier.
@f_b: Not really much to long for in the 0.9.13/14 releases. Instead ask for Linux to be included in the new Beta.
SUGGESTION:
I love Spotify, but there is a small detail that should be considered
why not change this green icon?
to this icons? (I've found in the same folder)
Please ,please change this on the next update I really want this, the icons fit perfectly with the taskbar
I don't know why don't use this BW icons
Just installed it on Linux Mint Cinnamon 17, the x64 version, and it works like a charm. Finally i can completly move from windows.
Song preview (long click on play button) not working anymore in "discover" tab. But preview works under "browse/overview" tab.

Och... Most usefull function removed 😞 Just tested web player - same problem (removed feature) there... Och well...
Thanks for reply.
This Spotify linux client is quite well done, it's got good look&feel and integration with unity. But it still has some bugs and need to be improved.
Some contextual menus (right click) open and don't close with another right click, they just start to open more contextual menus indefinitely. They even are on top of the others windows becoming so annoying. They're removable pressing ESC in spotify client only or selecting any option from them.
Also, the tray icon is missing buttons like: "like this song" or "add to the list" .
Any ideas of when this will be supported by Spotify?
I could be thinking about buy a premium account, but not while I have a buggy client to use it.

They are working on a new version that is currently in Beta for Windows and OS X, and hopefully Linux soon. It is radically different, being more based on web technologies running in a cross-platform framwork so it should work more or less identical on all platforms GUI-wise. Platform-specific bugs may still appear I guess, like local files playback and syncing with devices.
Nice to hear, thanks mate!

And when is it expected for? do we know if it will have linux version??
I like this current client, just need to be stable and bugs-free.
The truth: no one knows the future of the Linux version. There's no official declaration from Spotify.
