Spotify 0.9.17 for GNU/Linux (and the upcoming 1.x beta!)

Solved!

Spotify 0.9.17 for GNU/Linux (and the upcoming 1.x beta!)

On 24 March 2015, we rolled out an update to the desktop client for GNU/Linux. For installation instructions, see:

https://www.spotify.com/download/previews/

The version of the client is 0.9.17, and it will be the final 0.9.x client released for this platform. It has been a long time since the previous release (with the prior version being 0.9.11), and for those interested in the release notes, they will be identical to those for other desktop platforms for the versions 0.9.12-17, with the addition of the following platform-specific fixes:

- The machine's hostname is shown to other devices from Spotify Connect

- A 512px icon is used for the taskbar and menubar (unity integration)

We have decided to make a final release of 0.9.x desktop so that our users can pin this package if desired. Also we will make a separate package for the 0.9.17 release so that it is easier to find in the apt repository in case users need to revert to the prior version.

*EDIT*: The 0.9.17 package is now available, it is called spotify-client-0.9.17. If you don't want to receive the 1.x version, you can install this package instead (note that it both provides and conflicts with the spotify-client package).

Going forward, the official Linux beta will be released very soon! There are already some unofficial beta links floating around the forum, but so far we have not published a deb package to our official apt servers yet. We have been very busy getting 1.x out the door and sadly have not had as much time to devote to the GNU/Linux releases as we would like. Also, it has been unfortunate that we have not been better at keeping up with releases for this platform in general, but we have taken some steps to improve this for future releases.

Specifically, this means:

- We will be releasing a regular tarball file alongside our debian package for the benefit of non-debian users

- Spotify client releases will be made available for GNU/Linux users at the same time as users on other platforms

- We will also make a public `testing` apt repository to house unstable beta builds for testing

- However, we do not have a 32-bit version of the client available now. This is difficult for us to do for a number of reasons, but we will consider doing this if there is enough demand from the userbase.

Ive found a fix, just change the "prefs" under /.config/spotify/ to "http" instead "https" at network_addr_proxy and it works!

We just have to take it as it is... Or do we

I know, beta, preview, officially unsupported platform, not much time to devote to the GNU/Linux releases, etc...

But nevertheless: Any heads-up available?

As the leaked version 1.0.1 was amazingly stable, I find 2 months a bit long for "very soon"... Thank you!

Hi, sorry if this is was already posted; I've read some pages of this thread and couldn't find anything about it. Nor could I found a better way to report bugs. May be you could use an issue tracker.

From time to time, it seems like spotify freezes gnome and hangs all my applications. Even though the applications keep running in the background perfectly, and the GUI changes, I can't click on anything. The mouse still moves freely. The only way to fix this is by opening a terminal window (with ctrl+alt+t shortcut, because, once again, I cannot click on anything) and killing spotify.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 3.13 and Gnome 2 on a Lenovo t430 with Intel graphics.

Thank you!

Maybe you mean this bug? https://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Desktop-Linux-Mac-Windows/BUG-Spotify-catches-all-mouse-clicks...

Exactly, thank you very much

When we could expect official beta version?

I would guess within a month or two, at least before the summer vacation. 0.9.17 works great, though. They should take their time to make 1.x as stable as possible with the Linux specific features working. From there, updates should be easy, with the new tech.

SpotCommander - The most elegant, intuitive, feature-rich & universal remote control for Spotify, exclusive for Linux users!

Anyone else have a bug with right-click in version 0.9.17.1.g9b85d436 on artist pages with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS?

If I right click on the artist profile picture I can't get that pop up menu to disappear without either selecting an option from the list (such as "Copy HTTP Link") or clicking in a blank spot in the very left pane somewhere.

The right-click menu dialog is also "always-on-top" so if I switch workspaces it is also there. It's a very minor annoyance and I'm not complaining but just thought I would bring it to the devs attention. Keep up the good work guys. The Linux version is much appreciated.

@conormk I have the same behavior and it's not only when right clicking the artist profile picture this happens, a few other elements show similar behavior for the menu. Irritating but strangely I've got so used to it by now I don't even notice it.

Good catch!

I'd so like to agree, but I am so badly hit by the "Mouse freeze" bug, that I cannot use Spotify for any cases where I want to control it more often. When just firing up a huge playlist and let it run, then I can use that, but if I need to kill spotify every hour for gaining back my mouse control over my PC, then it's not usable at all.

So version 1.x is my saviour and that's why I desperately wait for a version that rules out the beta bugs and restores the removed features.

It's been over two months now.  Sure, 0.9.17 works fine (for some), but it feels like the Linux version is loosing priority again.

Can anyone help me get spotify working on opensuse tumbleweed?

running 0.9.17 under Fedora 22....working perfectly so far...

Nope, we definitely haven't forgotten about the Linux client. The 1.x beta is out now:
