Spotify doesn 't start after upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04

After my upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04, Spotify doesn 't start up anymore. Nothing visible happens after 'clicking' on the application icon.

I have tried to install Spotify again, but that doesn't work because the mesaage is that it already has bene installed.

Who can help me out?

TIA,

Theo

Ah. Did you try running the commands as root using sudo?

Does removing Spotify's config and cache files make any difference (it will recreate them on start):
rm -r ~/.cache/spotify
rm -r ~/.config/spotify

Hi Peter, thanks for your quick help! I have tried your suggestion, regrattably is didn't help however..

Can you try starting Spotify from a terminal window (just enter 'spotify' and press enter) and see if any error messages are logged on the console?

Themessage then is:

spotify: error while loading shared libraries: libudev.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Can you try installing libudev?

sudo apt-get install libudev1

Didn't help. This was the message

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libudev1 is already the newest version.
libudev1 set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 12 not upgraded.

It might be worth linking libudev1 to libudev0?

Ay, I am afraid the link you have send is a bit to difficult to understand for a Ubuntu dummy like me ;-;

Do you mind to give me the exact text I should use in the terminal ?

Hmm, libudev.so.0 is not available in any package for Ubuntu 13.10 either, according to packages.ubuntu.com, but Spotify works there. Haven't tried 14.04 yet, but will install it in a VM soon.

I have tried it but didn  succeed. take in account I didn 't really know what I was doing...

I faced the same issue when I upgraded last night. Here's what I did to get it working again:

1. Completely removed spotify with an 'apt-get remove spotify-client'

2. Re-added the repository in software sources.

3. Ran apt-get update (which took forever. Am I the only one facing this issue in 14.04?)

4. Installed Spotify again with 'apt-get install spotify-client'

Hope that helps !

Thanks for your help, Skanda,
I have tried your solution, but after the first command I get the following response:

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

You should post a warning at the start of the thread to read the entire thread first.  Re-installing worked for me.

Me neither I didn't get that part, but I just did the first step to uninstall Spotify and then followed these instructions: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/01/how-to-install-spotify-in-ubuntu-12-04-12-10 The instructions are for the older LTS version, but worked perfectly for me since it installs the updates too. I hope you get it working again! 🙂
