Playing a folder of Playlists

Solved!

Playing a folder of Playlists

Premium

US

macOS Monterey version 12.0.1

My Question or Issue:

I have a folder of playlists (My Top Songs 2016-2021, 6 playlists). I want to shuffle play all songs from all of the playlists by playing the folder. When doing so my queue ends up playing my song sometimes twice, three times, or four times in a row in some cases. It should just be a long shuffled list of all the songs once. It's a pretty annoying bug.

Hi Julian,

I suppose it is possible to have a couple of songs that could overlap. But not in the frequency I am seeing. I sometimes get 3 (screenshot), 4 or 5 times playing the same song in a row. My playlists are not that similar. I turned off the repeat button as you can see in my screenshot which also did not help.

I would like to note that I have 2 macbook pros

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) - work

2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7

16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2015) - personal

2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I have the same problem on both machines.

After some testing, I believe the bug has to deal with the top songs of the year playlists themselves. To be clear these are the playlists that Spotify sends out at the end of the year showing you your top most played songs of that year. There is something buggy with them when you follow them and add them to a folder. If I copy the contents of each playlist into a new playlist and add them to a folder then it works fine. But those individual playlists themselves are bugged. My guess it has something to do with how they are being generated.

Thanks for the help

Hey @splintmi,

Thanks for the post.

We'd recommend running a clean reinstall of the app. Please follow the steps from this Spotify Guide exactly, as this will assure that all app data is cleared completely, before reinstalling.

Keep us posted on how you get on with this.

Cheers.

Hey Alex,

Thanks for the suggestion. But unfortunately that did not fix my problem.

Thanks

Hey @splintmi,

Thank you for keeping us in the loop.

The shuffle feature selects randomly a song for each playlist included in the folder you’re playing. As you mention that the 6 playlists are top songs from 2016 to 2021, it’s possible that each playlist includes a couple songs that are present in the other playlists.

For example, if you have a song or different versions of it in your top songs 2017 and also in the 2018, the system will not recognize it as the same song as they are in separate playlists.

Also on the screenshot you sent, the “repeat” button is highlighted. This may cause a song to be played multiple times. Please deactivate the option to avoid repeating the same songs already played.

Hope it helps. If anything comes up, the Community will be here for you.

Hey again @splintmi,

Thank you very much for the info you shared with us.

As the Top playlists are generated by Spotify, it may have a different algorithm or behave differently. We're glad to know that the issue stops when you include those songs in different playlists. We appreciate the time you took to look deeper into this issue and for sharing the insights with us.

If anything else comes up, the Community will be here for you.

Have a nice day,
