Can't play local files

I installed Spotify yesterday and I can't play any local file in it.

I saw the problem and some 'solution' here on the forum, but nothing works for me.

I reinstalled. My quicktime player says its uptodate.

I checked the mixer thru the icon in my systray.

All the files play in all the other progs like iTunes, Winampt etc.

If I choose a file from Spotify it does play. But a soon as it is a local file it doesn't do anything.

I don't get an error or something. And it looks as if the song is playing, looking at the buttons at the bottom, and a speaker in green next to the name Local files at the left.

But I don't hear anything

 

I was wondering, should I have the option in Windows explorer like 'open with..' from Spotify? Cause it isn't there. Not in the menu and not in the other program's

 

Using windows 7 Ultimate and most recent version of Spotify. At least I assume, cause I downloaded it from het site here.

After reading a solution in one of the posts I installed Spotify again and it gave the solution for me.

 

The solution for me was installing a codec, advised in this post >> http://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Windows/Spotify-won-t-play-quot-local-files-quot-songs/td-p/...

This is how I solved it from a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional:

1. Installed Quicktime (Didn't work for me)
2. Installed mp3 codec: http://www.free-codecs.com/mpeg_layer_3_codec_download.htm
(Didn't work for me)
3. Tried the un-checking/reuploading of the music @ Preferences/Local Files in Spotify
(Also tried to drag-and-drop to see what difference that would make)
(Didn't work for me)
4. Tried un-checking Enable hardware acceleration @ Preferences in Spotify
5. Installed 2 more codecs, namely the Vorbis ones:

CoreVorbis_1.1.0.79_20050813: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/CoreVorbis.htm
ogg-acm-0036: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Vorbis_Ogg_ACM.htm

It finally worked. Not sure which one did the trick or if you'd even need both. Feel free to add to the list if you find a compression/format not working for you.

I'm surprised there isn't a conclusive guide or anything like it coming directly from Spotify in the FAQ or something.

Wowww. What a great support for a program used by so many users. Reading the forum even paid custumers don't get support.

A lot of things aren't working properly. In the program and on the website either.

So I'm gonna de-install this **bleep**ty program

Hello,

There is a couple of things you should check here. In your preferences menu (Edit > Preferences), check to see that the boxes are clicked under "Local Files". Then, try unchecking the "Enable Hardware Acceleration" setting under playback.

Also, you may need to check the file types being used here. We have a list of supported file types right here.

I have tried this and it doesn't work for me either.

Well I installed Spotify again to try the " unchecking 'Enable Hardware Acceleration"

Doesn't work.

Local files I had checked a lot of times already. Uncheck all of them , add  folders my musicfolders manual etc. Nothing helps

My files are all supported files and they play in iTunes, Winamp, Windows MP. So nothing wrong with the files I should say.

I tried all the solutions suggested and I had the same problem . I read the Spotify FAQ. http://www.spotify.com/us/help/faq/local-files/why-cant-i-import-the-music-i%e2%80%99ve-ripped-with-...  It answered my question. My next question is: When will Spotify fix this so I can or is there a way to convert all my music to  Mp3 format from Windows Media Player.

I found that if I delete all my music from Windows Media Player and re-rip it with the mp3 format set in properties I can get my local files to play on Spotify. Now this is extreme. I have a small CD collection . But if I experiment further I'm hoping if I can just re-rip without deleting I will get the same results.

I unchecked all the local file boxes, now I can play the stuff on my computer in, say, itunes, now through soptify.

Because i had songs on other programs like i tunes, spotify wouldnt allow me to pla  them. ill never know why...

Give me more detail on how you fixed it. I have stuff on iTunes I would like to move to my Spotify library. I cannot currently listen to tracks that I purchased on iTunes .

This is really strange but unchecking "enable hardware acceleration" worked immediately for about half of my local files. But somehow, not the others... even though they're part of the same CD.

 

Like, I can listen to everything on my computer but the problem is on my ipod touch. The songs show up on there but they won't play. Well, now half of them won't play. I did try the codec but it didn't do anything for me.

Check this moderator David. Why has spotify started doing this? It worked fine before. Why are we having to try all of these 'solutions' when the tech folk at spotify (i'm presuming you have them) should be cooking something up and giving us a fix in the form of an update?  C'mon Dave sort it out eh.

Many users have reported that installing Apple Quicktime fixes local file playback issues with Spotify, so it might be worth a shot if you don't already have it installed.

Open Spotify

Edit > Preferences > Local files

 

Uncheck all the boxes.

 

This won't play your local files. But your playlists will work using a streamed copy of the track from the Spotify source.

 

Then wait for Spotify to fix the problem.

I got kind of same problem.

 

My storage drive (E:) got a folder called "Music" and in the preference I've added the folder address. Still some of the songs won't get loaded and spotify complains that the track couldn't be found and ask me to manually import it again and again every time I restart my pc.

Doing what you said fixed it...

I'm still amazed that the Spotify team didn't come up with a solution or at least a FAQ explaining this !
