Is it possible to tell spotify not to play any songs with explicit lyrics? I like to play random playlists or spotify's top lists sometimes but don't like songs with explicit lyrics.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jonathan
Solved! Go to Solution.
Was this ever resolved or added by Spotify? I am limited on where I can use the app and have to go to other apps sometimes because of the lyrics.
Spotify I just changed my account to Family, nice idea, but wait, how can you call it a Family subscription?
I'm stunned there are no parental controls despite a loud and persistent community voice requesting this feature. It's not right to con people into opening a so-called 'family' account when you dont offer the opportunity to protect young ears.
I love music and want to share my passion with my kids, Spotify has been awesome, but I dont want to hear them listening to the F word and the rest every other song.
I'd like to add my voice to this thread. Please allow disabling of explicit songs. Simply doesn't work when playing music while making dinner at home, I don't like the abruptness of family friendly song leading into an explicit song. Google Music has this feature and it's wrong/broken that Spotify can't add the same feature for those of us who don't want to play explicit songs some or all of the time.
There is a question on Quora about the topic. I spent a little time researching the issue and collecting some information into an anwser. I hope it raises awareness. Maybe if we reach the right person at Spotify they'll add explicit content filtering. Please?!
I would also like to have this feature. It would be a nice thing to have as I don't generally like listening to explicit songs.
Thanks for that… I' just did some research and it seems that Google Play Music is the only one that offers a 'filter explicit songs in radio" even that is only when listening to radio. This is fine when I'm in control of the music - but I want to give my kids access to a decent music system so they can learn and build a solid base of everything from Bowie to LCD soundsystem (even Beiber if they really have to)
Anyway its better than nothing I'll have to minitor their playlists and history.
So I'm done. So long Spotify. It's been good. But not good enough - LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!!!!
I agree. Its not about censoring music, its about keeping explicit music away from the ears of young kids so that they get to enjoy access to music too - If as their parent I'm able to flick a switch that disallows music with expletives from my family members app then thats freedom for them. Right now they're not able to use Spotify freely because I cant let them have unfettered access.
Case in point: https://open.spotify.com/track/6kbt1jfGL139CuvWw8J68n
I love love love the Sleaford Mods but I dont want my 9 year old son listening to it, not yet
Adding a request for bypassing explicit songs. I get that Spotify wants to "share content in the form that they receive it," or whatever, but I don't believe people are asking them to edit songs, just give the option to remove explicit songs from playlists. That would be my wish anyway. I've read that many people have stopped using Spotify on account of this feature not being added. I may be one of them before too long.
I've been using Spotify Premium for several years. I'm going to finally have to move on as my kids have started listening to Spotify as well. It really should be a priority for them but for some reason it isn't. Just allow us to remove Explicit material via a Preference please. *Sigh*
John posted this information to Quora: "There’s also a link here where you can vote on it getting added. Explicit button"
This link is on the first page but I didn't know that and I don't think others will always see that so I'm posting it here as well. Note: the poll started years ago so don't get your hopes up but please do raise awareness around the poll so more people can vote.
I clicked the link and voted for the feature right away, please do the same.
Good bye Spotify. So long and thanks for all the fish. Kids are really enjoying Apple music. No pain, No explicit content and they tell me making playlists is way better! Let us know when you escape from the rabbit hole and get back to reality!
Spotify has not addressed this issue. As a result, they lost my 5 family subscriptions, all of my cousins and their children (14 more) my neighbor's family (6) and countless others that I've talked to about it. They just don't care. Below is a list other music services that offer filtering for explicit lyrics. Based on Spotify's decisions to not respond to customer requests, I suspect that a few years from now we won't even remember what Spotify was.
Google Play, iTunes, iHeartRadio, and Pandora all allow subscribers to filter out explicit songs.
this is showing as solved!!! I don't think so!!!

Obviously this is a solution of sorts! If Spotify's only solution is just to leave for an alternative music provider well it's not really the solution I or anyone else was after! Spotify clearly have no interest in fixing this issue, so I would suggest that we all write to our favourite band and ask them to boycott Spotify until they relent. I'm going to write to Bono today!
Thanks everyone who has replied on this thread.
Spotify, we are asking for a reasonable request. We would like to control whether or not we listen to explicit lyrics in the music we choose in our playlists or using your curated radio feature. Most other streaming services carry this as a feature including Pandora, Slack, iHeart and Milk. I am sure there are others that do as well. You have the music available since I do create playlists and carefully search and add radio safe versions to them. I really enjoy using your service but it is getting harder and harder to justify paying for my family plan when I can not even use it at work or for parties without watching it closely instead of enjoying myself. thanks.
