My Question or Issue

Recently when using the current version of the Spotify desktop app, the 'Recent searches' list on the Search page has stopped updating with whatever I click on in the search results. The issue abruptly began sometime this month. The searches already in the list stayed there, but no newer ones were being added - except, seemingly at random, it would occasionally work for one search then stop again (impossible to consistently reproduce, not contingent on the music being searched).

This problem has persisted across multiple updates. I tried logging out and in, clearing the app cache, entering and exiting a private session, manually removing entries from the list, all to no effect. Then I tried a clean reinstall, making sure nothing was left over in AppData or elsewhere, but it's still not saving my searches. This makes keeping track of the music I want to check out way more of a hassle than it usually is.

It's not a cross-device issue with my account (my search history is being saved normally on Android). The only thing I can think of that's changed with my account this month is I requested the data dump of my extended streaming history, but I don't know if that lines up with when this confusing app behaviour started (or see how it could be connected at all).

I can't seem to find any other reports of this problem. If anyone has any idea what could be 'freezing' my search history like this, except for at random moments, I'd be very grateful. Something to do with folder permissions? Available memory? A setting somewhere in Windows? Thanks.

Hi there @tcex28,

Thanks for the post.

The Recent Searches is populated with popular searches for albums/ artists that you've done and won't include every single track, artist, or album that you've searched for. Regarding the search results that you get in your search bar - currently, the app is not displaying your recent searches. This is a part of a test that Spotify is running.

Hope this info helps.

The exact same thing is happening to me, just for the record. On the desktop app (Windows 10), the "Recent Searches" section stopped updating a long time ago. Doesn't matter what I search for, nothing gets added to the list anymore.

On the Android app, however, it works as usual: I search for an artist, then the next time I tap on the search icon, that artist appears on the Recent Searches list.

Same thing here. "Recent Searches" doesn't update at all on Windows. It needs to be fixed.

I hate this 🙃 not sure what tests you guys are running there, but it's been months and it's frustrating to have to constantly remember what I searched for. For anyone coming here in the future, you can have your searches saved if you just click on the result you're looking for first instead of directly playing/queuing, then it'll save what you clicked into recent searches 👍

Hi Alex,

When is this test being completed, it is very frustrating. I have resulted to pen and paper to list new releases I am waiting to be added. It worked fine in the past.

This test sucks. Wrap it up.

Same on MacOS. I tended to use recent searches to make a note of artists that I want to revisit but I can't do that anymore because recent searches doesn't get updated. Very annoying.

The current version appears to have partially fixed this for me - searched albums are now consistently being stored in the recent searches list, as long as I clicked on them from under the 'Albums' list and not the Top Result. (Same for artists and other items.) At least the basic functionality is back.
