My Question or Issue
When I open the Spotify (Windows Desktop application), I no longer receive the login prompt (it had stopped working maybe 2-3 days ago); instead, I receive the prompt in the attached image, asking me to login through the browser. Login from the browser works, but I would prefer to login from the app and not always open a browser.
I have already tried uninstalling, clearing temporary and registry files, restarting the computer, then reinstalling.
I checked with my Firewalls and they all seem to permit Spotify to do as it pleases.
I don't seem to have any connection issues as I'm freely surfing the web and logging in from the browser.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Solved! Go to Solution.
I have the same problem. After entering my username and password in the browser and clicking "Continue to the App" I receive an error message (see below.)
Would be very grateful for access to a workaround that does not require me to login through my browser.
Hey folks,
Thanks for your replies and for the info shared.
In this case, we'd recommend trying to perform the authentication process from a different browser than the one you've been using. To do it, you can change your default browser to see if you notice any difference. If you're using a Windows computer, you can follow the steps in this article. If you're using a Mac, you can follow these steps.
If the above doesn't do the trick, would you mind sharing with us the make/model and OS, along with the Spotify version you're running there? You can check this in the settings of your devices. On Windows, you can go to settings> Apps> Spotify (you'll have to click on it to see the version).

Been trying to login all day, it says go to your browser to login, I'm on my browser I click Log In and it does absolutely nothing.
I have the same problem, tried everything, the thing is for me it doesnt even pop up the log in web in browser, so i pretty much cant log into the app
I tried Chrome, Edge, and Firefox and this did not work, unfortunately. I continue to receive the same error message (cannot connect to 127.0.0.1)
OS: Windows 10 Enterprise 22H2
Spotify: 1.2.13.661.ga588f749
So you have the same problem where it doesnt pop up the browser ?
If I press "Log in" it won't open up the browser in order to log in .. anyone got an ideea ?
It seems to be a windows bug. After setting my web browser (Brave) Manually as default it worked. This way to login has nothing to do with safety and is just against the user experience. You con implement the additional data gathering inside the app without angering your user base.
To clarify, every other app worked no problem with brave before, so it might be a combination of bugs from windows 11 and the app.
Found a fix, make sure you default browser is the one you have spotify logged in on and then turn on background apps and retry
@romadryn: did you read&try this? https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Linux/Re-Spotify-Windows-Desktop-Forces-Login-Through-Brows...
btw this community board is also bad user experience: I write a reply, but then I can't find it nowhere in the board and have to lookup my user profile
Can't login due to the same reasons described above.
Don't try to improve feature that already worked great.
Having less and less desire to use your service 😒
Hey folks,
Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome.
In this case, as mentioned before here, we'd suggest you change the default browser that is set on your computer to see if you notice any changes on this behavior. To do it, you can follow the steps in this article.
On another note, it's worthwhile to check if there is a firewall application that guards your local network. Make sure you white-list both Spotify and your preferred browser on it. If you're using any ad-blockers in your browsers, and if you have a blocklist make sure it’s not disallowing localhosts.
If you continue having inconveniences, please send us:
If you're receiving an error when trying to authenticate, keep in mind we're also investigating that behavior in this thread.

Can you explain why this annoying new feature is more secure? Because without a technical explanation, that claim is dubious at best, which honestly doubles the annoyance...
Edit: this is a duplicate comment because this awful support platform told me the original wasn't posted, then made me wait an hour to post again, and only by chance did I notice the original error was a lie. I really shouldnt be surprised though. For anyone who's made it this far: after 6 years I've reinstalled iTunes for Windows. It's not great but it's still Far better than Spotify. I feel sooooo good about this I just had to share. Anyone fed-up with this truly terrible "support" solution and the unending bad decisions for their UI, try literally anything else. Set yourself a goal and follow through. I have some work ahead of me, but I cannot wait to ditch this awful service, it's like I'm quitting a really bad habit. Good luck everyone!
