My Question or Issue

When I open the Spotify (Windows Desktop application), I no longer receive the login prompt (it had stopped working maybe 2-3 days ago); instead, I receive the prompt in the attached image, asking me to login through the browser.  Login from the browser works, but I would prefer to login from the app and not always open a browser.

I have already tried uninstalling, clearing temporary and registry files, restarting the computer, then reinstalling.

I checked with my Firewalls and they all seem to permit Spotify to do as it pleases.

I don't seem to have any connection issues as I'm freely surfing the web and logging in from the browser.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hello. So I downloaded the spotify app but I cant login. Its telling me to continue in browser but Im already registered there. I tried to re-login but it didn't work, I even tried creating new account but still nothing.

Im on PC

Hi there @My7ter,

Thanks for reaching out. Does this only happen on the Desktop app or on others too? Consider trying a clean reinstall there and then logging in again.

Hope this helps.

Hello itโ€™s not working please help I have the same problem I downloaded it from the Spotify website but itโ€™s not working

I have the same problem please help I downloaded it from the Spotify website but itโ€™s still not working . I hope you respond

I was experiencing the same issue as everyone else here and had tried all of the troubleshooting steps just like everyone else and also had no luck.
I then randomly decided to open the settings for the Windows Subsystem for Android which I have on my PC (as does a lot of people). There is a setting in here to have the WSA run at all times or just as needed. I have it set to always run (which is not the default).
I then selected the option in the settings to "Turn Off" the Subsystem. The moment the subsystem stopped running, my browser instantly opened and logged me into the Spotify app on Desktop.

I doubt that this is just a big coincidence and think there might be some sort of connection between the WSA running and the Desktop app not being able to correctly call the browser.

Hopefully this small piece of additional information is helpful and others are able to log in properly (and Spotify can take this info and fix this stupid bug that should have been caught in testing).

My Question or Issue:

Spotify forces me to log in through the browser.

๐Ÿค”

When I open the Spotify (Windows Desktop application), it now makes/Forces me to login through the browser. Login from the browser works, but I would prefer to login from the desktop APP, instead of the browser.

๐Ÿ˜’ I have already tried uninstalling, clearing temporary and registry files, restarting the computer, then reinstalling.

โ˜น๏ธ So what I did to fix the problem, is I uninstalled it completely and forever, from my Windows 10 home desktop computer, and since the Linux versions doing it too, i completely and forever uninstalled it from my Linux machine that's also a desktop computer.

๐Ÿ‘Ž What you're doing is a very stupid idea.

If we wanted to use the browser to log in, we'll just log into Spotify from the browser and use the browser version instead, what's the purpose of using an app on your desktop computer, if you can't log in through the app ?.

spotify windows try to open a pop up but it doens't open up. so i can't open spotify donwload on my computer

I don't know if this helps for y'all but I just had issues with my standard browser.

I switched my standard browser to Edge just to approve Spotify and this resolved it for me.

It looks like you're facing a login issue with the Spotify Windows Desktop application, which is prompting you to login through a browser instead of the app itself. Despite trying various troubleshooting steps, the problem persists. It's important to ensure that your firewall settings are allowing Spotify's access. Since you're able to browse the web without connection issues, it might be a localized problem with the app. While awaiting further suggestions, you might want to consider exploring the benefits of Spotify Premium on your PC, as it could potentially offer a smoother experience.

This worked for me just as I was about to give up on waiting for that 15 sec to end.

15 seconds is just too damn long in 2023 ๐Ÿ˜‚

I've got a similar situation, but for me the tab does get opened in the browser, however clicking "Continue to the app" doesn't do anything, the page loads a bit and says it timed out, so i can't use the desktop app at all.
I've tried 4 different browsers with 2 different account, it just straight up doesn't work. Clearing browser cache, turning off any and all antivirus' doesn't help.

Honestly, it's been two weeks and the app is completely unusable...

I have the same problem i tried reinstalling, both directly from Spotify and MS Store, tried 4 different browsers, turned off antivirus', clearing browser cache, cookies etc. Nothing works, the desktop version hasn't been working for at least two weeks.

The login opens a tab in the browser, but "Continue with app" doesn't do anything and the site times out, what good are security features if you can't use the product...

What worked for me was to just ignore the 'Current' download option on the download page: "Windows (Current  | 8.1  | 8  | 7)"
I just downloaded the windows 7 version of the installer, and it works on windows 11, giving you an actual login prompt on the desktop app. I think 8.1, 8, and 7 are all the same installer, since they all download the same file, if so all 3 should work.

Extra Rant:
I had the same problem, recently switched to windows 11, and I like to keep stuff tidy, which usually makes windows mad because they love their cancer bloatware being splattered all over the C: drive.

It seems Spotify decided to become the U2 of windows 11, coming pre-installed and baked in... introducing all sorts of location conflicts, program assumptions that might break if a user decides to organize their own system or turn off some data collection features.
I still love spotify, but this forceful install process just ruins the image of what would otherwise feel like a premium independent app.

GJ spotify, you now come pre-bundled like bloatware and lumped yourself in with great user acclaimed products like Bing, McAfee, Internet explorer, etc...

Even if the product is great, the fact that you force it just makes me want to delete you out of spite... Just add back a manual install at least, geez, I didn't even attempt to solve the root issue, it's probably because it assumes I kept all the default microsoft edge file options, and since I basically replaced it fully with firefox, the login became useless or something.

This is even more important in min-maxing system performance with partitioned drives for something like a super fast m.2 ssd.
What if I hypothetically wanted my operating system and vital apps on a super expensive super fast drive with limited space.

Don't presume I want my music app chilling right next to system vital data, you better believe people will be quite picky about what apps to have on their supersonic gen "6" $1000 500GB drive.

Hi I had this problem but then ran the Spotify application as administrator and it worked for me.

hope this helps

The Spotify desktop app now forces logins to go through the browser. Not only is this bad design because it defeats the purpose of having a desktop app in the first place, but it is a security issue because logging out through the app does not work - if you click login again it opens a browser that is still logged in.
This may be the worst design oversight in any modern app, and should be rectified.

I have the same issue. Desktop app is unusable on ubuntu 22.04 for me. I don't have sudo on my computer so installing it through snap and apt is not an option for me. I'm using flathub to install spotify, I have version 1.2.22.982.g794acc0a. Login screen opens, clicked "Log in", I'm not seeing any browser tab. I click try again, nothing. Tried both firefox and chrome as default browser, nothing seems to help. Reinstalled spotify from flatpak, still nothing.

Currently using spotify from browser which is a pain in the ass, because it's lacking some features (for eg. sorting liked songs by artist) and harder to switch to it.

Can somebody look into this, I can't be the only one affected by it, seems Zach has similar issues.

Thanks

Been trying to log into spotify for a few days, tried setting both firefox and edge to default browser but it just never logs me inn even though I manage to log into the browser.

Really annoying, just have to use my phone or browser for spotify in the meanwhile, youtube music is starting to look real appealing...

just download the old version

Install the app. Then I get a log in screen, log in. Then I get a screen to say I am logged in as ........ Then I click 'continue to the app'. Then I get a screen asking me to log in on the web browser...(I am already logged in on the web browser) and it goes round and round and........Then eventually I get 'Service is temporally unavailable, please try again later. (Error code: auth:1)

This is such a pain, everyone's is having issues!!

I have my browser default set, I've used Edge and Chrome, still the same, its just not working. I'll just have to use the brower version and just uninstall this rubbish!

it says to go to browser to log in and so i did but nothing happend. its still asking me to go to browser to login.
