Spotify freezes my PC

Spotify freezes my PC

My Question or Issue

With both the Spotify program or app on, my PC often completely freezes my PC. I tried reinstalling a few times. The Spotify Web Player works completely fine. Moreover, both the program and the app was very laggy. All the freezes involved Spotify and Google Chrome being on (especially if I turned them on at the same time). Right now, I don't have any version of Spotify installed in my PC, but would like to use the Desktop version (Web Player doesn't have all the options I need).

Hey @ciuciuvara, welcome to the Community 🙂

I'd try if disabling local files or hardware acceleration would stop Spotify from freezing.

If you have a lot of local files, that may cause the freezing issue.  You can disable both of these settings in Spotify's Preferences.

How much memory does your PC have?

Chrome takes up quite a bit of memory and so does Spotify - for example on my PC it currently uses about 490MB of my RAM while my browser takes up a whole GB.
When memory is filled up, your processes will start using the paging file on your hard drive and that will explain freezing - your hard drive is a lot slower than RAM.

If that's the issue, I'd suggest installing more memory or a SSD (or both, for best performance). 🙂

Let me know how you get on!

On Tuesday I decided to download Spotify to my HP pc - HUGE mistake!

Whilst it downloaded ok and I was able to play my music it then began to takeover my pc. The cursor just froze and then disappeared altogether meaning I had no way of restarting my pc other than using the power button.

The pc is now useless, the power button switches the pc on for a second or two then immediately switches off. I will now have to contact a local engineer to come over and try and fix the problem.

on line forums speak of Spotify as some form of malware which probably explains why the PCs just won't start up.

Me too. I have to do a hard reboot every **bleep** time and I'm over it! I'm in the middle of work and the entire thing freezes, mouse vanishes and I have to restart using the on button and start all over again. FIX IT Spotify!
