When did Spotify start counting the amount of plays for each song?

Spotify has existed for 10 years and I have a hard time believing that they tracked the amount of plays for each song as early as that given how many songs that were really popular 5-8 years ago seems to have way too few listens when they were that popular. Anyone know? I've only been here active for a couple years.
