Windows10 Desktop App does not see the speaker set-up that Android app sees

Windows10 Desktop App does not see the speaker set-up that Android app sees

BACKGROUND
I use Spotify Family
I use Windows10 Sonos Desktop version 1.1.48.625.g1c87c7f7
I use Android Version version 8.5.94.839

I wirelessly connect both units to the same WiFi (2,4Ghz) Router. The router ALSO has a Sonos Boost wired directly.

Our house has:
x2 Sonos Play 5 2nd gen paired
x1 Sonos Play 5 2nd gen in the bathroom
x1 Sonos Play 5 2nd gen in the bedroom
x1 Sonos PlayBar in the surround array
x1 Sonos Subwoofer in the surround array
x2 Sonos Play 1 2nd as rear in the surround array

My Tesla P90D has a built in Spotify account. The car isn't on the WiFi network but runs on its on 3G card buit in to the car, and is "always on".

PROBLEM BACKGROUND
I start the Windows machine and then the Spotify Desktop app.
I see all my songs, playlists, albums - no problem
I set a song to play - no problem
I click on the "Devices Available" in the bottom right corner

ACTUAL PROBLEM
The Desktop app only shows "This computer" or the "Tesla P90D", it sees none of the other speakers.

If I activate the Spotify App on my Android phone, it "sees" all the speakers.

AVAILABLE WORKAROUND
To get around the limitation of the desktop device, I start the song / playlist on the Android phone and THEN the desktop app "sees" the speakers that I have selected on the Android phone.

DESIRED SOLUTION
That the Desktop app sees the same speakers as the Android App.

Hey there @mark_colclough,

Thank you for reaching out to us here in the Community. We're happy to help.

Can you try the following:

  • Perform a clean reinstall of the app. This will make sure there's no old cache files causing this
  • Check if the Spotify version and device firmware are up to date
  • Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
  • Restart your router

Let us know how everything goes so that we can continue to assist you if you need us to. We're always one reply away.

Cheers!

Hello

Thanks for your suggestions. I completed all steps successfully, but the
same problem persists.

What's next?

Hey again @mark_colclough,

Thank you for your reply and for the troubleshooting steps you've done so far.

Can you do the following:

  • Check firewall settings and make sure Spotify has all the permissions
  • Close the app for 10-20 minutes to see if that makes a difference
  • Try the web player
  • Try a different computer if it's possible

It would also be great if you can let us know which version you have after the clean reinstall?

We'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Cheers!

Firewall checked. Spotify has full permissions. Firewall deactivated. Spotify Desktop has same problems, and still doesn't discover the Sonos speakers before the Android app does.

Web player checked. It performs exactly like the Desktop App does, and does not discover the Sonos speakers before the Android app does.

When Android is activated first, then the Desktop App and the Spotify Web Player both discover the phone and then the Sonos speakers.

Hey @mark_colclough,

Thanks for keeping in touch and for trying our suggestions.

Can you try unlinking and linking your Spotify account to the Sonos app? Find the steps to do so here.

If it doesn't do the trick, could you try logging in to a different account, like a friend's or relative's, and let us know if this behavior persists?

Lastly, let us know the Spotify version you're running.

Keep us posted. We'll be on the lookout.

Hello

Here's what I have done:

1. My girlfriend has a Windows PC and a Samsung S8+, and I have a
Windows PC and a OnePlus 7t Pro
2. I moved those four devices to a brand new router
3. I moved the Sonos Boost to that router
4. I updated all software manually, so both my arena and my girlfirends
arean are on the same versions.
5. I made sure that all speakers and all devices see each other. All
success.
6. I went ahead and unlinked my Sonos account from both our Spotify
accounts
7. I rebooted all machines to make sure that Sonos and Spotify no
longer "saw" each other
8. It took several reboots for the change to be inherited
9. After it was inherited, I uninstalled all instances of Sonos and
Spotify from all four devices
10. After that, I reinstalled fresh copies to all four devices, making
sure that version numbers in identical platforms are the same
11. After that, I went into my Sonos Desktop and linked the Sonos
environment to both my GF spotify and my spotify accounts (we have a family
plan).
12. After that, I set her Spotify PC Desktop to play a playlist and my
Spotify PC desktop ditto
13. Her Windows machine saw her phone, also running on the same Spotfiy
account
14. My Windows machine saw my phone, also running on the same Spotfiy
account
15. Her Windows machine ALSO saw all the Sonos speakers, using the
"Sonos Connect" through Spotify
16. Her phone ALSO saw all the Sonos speakers, using the "Sonos Connect"
through Spotify
17. My Windows Desktop did NOT see any Sonos speakers
18. But my phone did ALSO saw all the Sonos speakers, using the "Sonos
Connect" through Spotify
19. My Spotify PC Desktop magically inherited the Sonos speakers again,
once I set my phone to play on them, exactly as my original posting
described.

So, all this to circle right back to where we started.

Desktop versions: 1.1.52.687.gf5565fe5
Android versions: 8.5.98.984

Hey there @mark_colclough,

Thanks for keeping in touch and for sharing all that info.

Since we couldn't replicate this on our end and it works fine on another PC and account under the same conditions, this seems to be isolated to your PC. In this case, you could reach out to the manufacturer for more info on what might be causing this.

In the meantime, we recommend to keep using the workaround of opening the mobile app.

If you need a hand with anything else, we're always a post away.

Cheers!

Hi All,

I know this is an old topic, but I have exactly the same problem as described above by mark_colclough. My playbar is only wired via a switch with wifi turned off and has it's own wifi network connection to connect to all my other sonos devices.
I also followed practically all of the above steps and still did not resolve my problem. The laptop where the problem persists is an Acer Aspire 3. When I try a different laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad t480) it does work immediately. This is very very strange and indeed must somehow be hardware related. But a SW update has to be able to resolve this as it does work when first connecting spotify to my sonos system via my android phone (it then shows up on my Acer laptop). So hardware problem; likely, but can for sure can be contained with a SW patch.

So I had a similar problem. My Laptop-Spotify was unable to see or connect to my Soundbar or Soundstation, whereas both my phone and Desktop PC could.
I could still ping both sound-devices though, so I it wasn't a network problem. Or so I thought.

Turns out I had IPv6 disabled in my Network Adapter settings.

Apparently connecting to Sound-Devices with Spotify only works with IPv6  ?🤔

Anyway, turning it on instantly solved the problem for me.

Hope I could help someone 😄
