"Can't Play Next Song" W10

"Can't Play Next Song" W10

Hi there,

I'm currently running the student premium plan, on an iPhone 6s and W10 desktop - UK based.

My Question or Issue

Ever since I upgraded from free to premium I've had constant issues with 'can't play next song' on the desktop. - However the webplayer works fine at a lesser quality.

Just to confirm I'm not listening to any local files, all devices have been removed as of now also. I've restarted my computer, cleared the cache and uninstalled (then deleted the temp files) several times over to no avail.

On mobile it's absolutely fine, on the app it simply doesn't work - If this is the level of service I get through premium I'd rather take my money back and go elsewhere.

Hey @Jlombard_

I suggest checking if your current country is matching the country marked on your account.

I also recommend making sure your audio device is set as Default.
Try this:

1. Right-click on the speaker icon on Taskbar, click on Playback Devices.
2. Highlight the device you're using and set it as Default. Click OK.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

My speaker icon R click options are; open Volume mixer, open sound settings, Spartial sound (off), sounds and troubleshoot sound problems.

My location is set up as the UK also.

@Jlombard_

Select 'Sounds' there. The Playback tab should be there.
You can also try Open Sound Settings.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

Sorry for the late reply! been away for the weekend!

The sound settings are what they should be. Any other solutions to try?

@Jlombard_

I'd suggest disabling 'Hardware Acceleration', it's in Spotify menu dots - View - Hardware Acceleration.

Also, does twiddling in Spotify's music quality settings in Preferences bring any change, eg enabling and disabling high quality sound?

Preferences are under Menu dots - Edit.

You can also try disabling local files from the same place, just scroll downwards a little.

This error message has often appeared when there are problems with the soundcard (not default or whatever else), but since yours worked before, it's a bit strange.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

I'll try it out this afternoon and let you know the outcome

Still didn't work. I've attached my settings

Hey, all!

I suggest removing access for all apps you have connected to your Spotify account.

You can do that here, and you will have to reconnect the third party apps you use (like last.fm).

Also, try hitting the Log Out Everywhere button on your account. This logs you out from every device you have logged in with Spotify, and you'll have to re-login.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

I've left these 3 apps (see attachment) and signed out from all devices - I'll update you as to whether it works!

Nope, didn't work

@Jlombard_

Just to check, can you use the web player?

I'd also suggest trying another connection (or a hotspot). VPN's and proxies might cause issues as well.

Spotify has proxy settings in its Preferences (Advanced Settings) too. Try setting it to 'HTTP' or 'no proxy' or 'auto detect' to see if this makes the error go away.

Also, try disabling Crossfade. It's also under Advanced Settings in Preferences, under Playback section.

If you have any pending updates from Windows, install them. Windows 10 includes driver-related updates as well, these may solve many issues.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

Went through all solutions, Luckily I've got the web player but at this rate I'll probably take my custom elsewhere as it's still not working.

I could quite easily add an ad blocker to the web player and have the 'premium' service for free.

@Jlombard_

That's really strange!

At this point I'd suggest this hosts file method. It's quite easy, you just need to have admin credentials at hand. Your issue also sounds like something is blocking the Spotify traffic.

Try this:

1. open Notepad as an administrator (right-click - Open as Administrator)
2. go to File - Open and navigate to

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

3. Choose "All Files" instead of "Text Documents" next to the File Name box. You'll see a handful of files. Pick hosts and click on Open.
4. The file is opened. You will see a block of text with # in front of each line and might see entries like

0.0.0.0 website.com
127.0.0.1 website2.com

Check for any entries with spotify or fastly in the address. Examples may look like:

0.0.0.0 weblb-wg.gslb.spotify.com
0.0.0.0 prod.b.ssl.us-eu.fastlylb.net

(and any variations inbetween)
5. If you do find any, you can delete the line. You can also add a # in front of the line, that's 'commenting out'.
6. Save your changes. Restart Spotify.

Let me know how it goes 🙂
