My Question or Issue

Spotify gives me the error message "Spotify can't play this right now. If you have the file on your computer you can import it." when I try to play any song from a certain album (TeenWitch by BONES). It has happened at least 4 times between opening and closing the app. I have the album downloaded as well and it is imported to spotify. Is this album being censored by spotify? I am allowing explicit songs and have good connection. Everything else works. Let me know if this is the wrongsection/forum.

Hmmm.... i checked to make sure that songs were available in your region and it is so im not sure whats going on.  However another thing you could try is delete local file cache. To do this go to %appdata% > roaming > Spotify > User > Your Account Name > delete Local-Files.   Also make sure that you are closed out of Spotify before doing this so then when you launch Spotify again it would already be corrected.

Let me know how it goes!

Okay, so incase that didn't work for you, as it didn't for me, I found another solution.

Open control panel and go to Hardware and Sound>Sound. Click on your default device and open properties>Advanced. Then change the format to something higher or lower. After pressing 'Apply' My Spotify worked again. (After it worked, set your quality to the highest it can go, better audio quality and all)

I know it doesn't make a lot of sense on the face of things, but try changing your speaker output. (on your system)

If anyone still wondering here, like me, and tried all methods here and none resolved. It was so simple which made me think I'm the dumbest person in the world.

Windows Settings > System > Sound > Advanced Sound Options > App Volume and Device Preferences.

If Spotify isn't showing, try to play anything. If showing in the list, check if the "Output" box is selected with the your Output device you are using (Headset, speakers, TV, etc.). Mine was blank, I switched to my Headset and it solved.

I hope Spotify put this information to FAQ very soon

I've tried everything here... it's ridiculous that this can be such a common issue but Spotify aren't doing anything.  My speakers and sound are fine, I can play files on my PC, I can play Spotify through the web browser - to the point where if I then open the PC app it recognises I'm playing though Chrome and can control it.

If I just use the app though, nothing plays at all.  Very rarely get an error message, just stops - when I do, it's the "Spotify can't play this right now" message at the top.

Same here, nothing changed on my computer and suddenly spotify won't work. Tried every mentioned possability here and in the FAQ without any changes. Spotify is not playing any songs.

Still, the webplayer and all other devices work perfectly fine for me.

I had changed the audio output device for Spotify to a Bluetooth speaker yesterday so I could play some music in the house but use my headphones to listen to a conference call. Today I tried to play Spotify without the speaker connected and was receiving this error message for every song I tried to play.

Starting Spotify on a really long playlist so it will appear in the App volume and device preferences list in Windows 10, then changing the Output device from (blank) to the output on my laptop resolved the problem. I suspect that reconnecting the Bluetooth speaker would also resolve the problem although I haven't tested it.

Yes, I just plugged headphones in and the songs play now. Windows 10 desktop.

It looks like if your system can't identify a device to play sounds to, Spotify gives this error. You can reproduce this issue by disabling all of your output/playback devices (Windows 10).

Hi, This has happened to all of the songs I've imported to my playlist. Its grayed out on the play gives me the error message "Spotify can't play this right now. If you have the file on your computer you can import it". " I can still play these songs from the playlist on my iPhone. I have the playlist downloaded on my iPhone, but not on the computer so I think that's causing the difference. So do I need to re-add every song? Or is there another way? P.s I have tried deleting the local files in the user folder already. Anyways thanks in advance.

Hi, so OK,  this happened to me again (second time), few days ago, my previous methood did not work. In short, simply (for Windows OS) shut down spotify,  go to the folder C:\Users\'name of your pc'\AppData\Roaming\Spotify\Users  now rename or delete all files having the ending .bnk in all folders in the 'user' folder (if there are more than one folder)  then when you are sure there are no .bnk 'old' files left, reboot your PC and you should be good !! hopefully 🙂

Btw. this happened to my spotify when I clicked a song that one of the people I follow was listening too !!

It didn't fix my problem. The song is still grey and unplayable.

None of this has worked for me.

I have deleted the cache countless times and deactivated hardware acceleration, as well as deactivated crossfade and also set it to 0s.

I have uninstalled the app and reinstalled it 3 times.

Nothing is working for me, please help, I can't listen to any song even if I have downloaded it.

Do you have the folder location for a MAC? Having the same problem, the first 4 songs on my playinglist are skipped after just 1 second.

Hi, unfortunatly not. For years I've used iPad alot for Spotify.. never a problem. Sorry.

But iOs is different from MacOs, so I don't have any problems with the iOs app either. It works as it supposed to work on my iPhone, so it is only the desktop version which has a bug (and it is a bug).

Hi, yes true, as I said MacOs is not my thing, so little help from me regarding it !! Just to try to help.. have you gone through these trouble shooting points ?.. https://support.spotify.com/is/using_spotify/troubleshooting/playback-issues/

Appreciated, but I think that this is something Spotify itself should look at. It's crazy that I can't play certain songs. Also, their, re-install and install comes across as if there is something wrong with the install/os. I'm not running Windows, so that does not make a lot of sense, to me.

Hi - I am receiving this same message so I cannot play anything off of the Spotify App on my Mac Book Air.  It will play through the Desktop version.  I have cleared the Caches several times.  I have re-installed the app three times.  I tried turning off the Hardware Accleration.  Basically I have tried most of what has been mentioned and still get the message, so I am not sure what to do.  I don't know how to go to %appdata% - I don't know what that is.  I am on a Mac Book Air running Mojave OS 10.14.4.  My phone app works fine.  I am a Premium user.  Any help would be great.

Hi,

i followed what you've said, i closed spotify, deteled all the files like you've said, restarted it and it still didn't work.

i turned off the acceleration "thing" in the advance settings

I desinstalled and reinstalled Spotify, still didn't work

I'm on Windows 10, and the spotify app comes from the Microsoft Store

I can't play any music on my computer althrough it works on my phone

I'm little bit desperate, i'm on this problem for the  last 2 hours and i can't find a solution which works
