Add support for Google ChromeCast

Will you be adding support to the ChromeCast that Google announced today? Would be great to be able to easily stream music from all my devices to my receiver and tv.

Please see the Api information here: https://developers.google.com/cast/

Update: implementing ChromeCast is superior to using the Chrome browser plugin to move a tab with the Spotify web interface to your TV for multiple reasons. Most importantly:

 - You can stream higher fidelity

 - You can stream from every device, not only from a computer/laptop

 - You can control from multiple devices (so if I leave the room my wife can control Spotify with her phone)

If implemented correctly this would match the functionality of Sonos for a much lower price.

Update February 4th 2014: Okay, so Google has released the SDK now. Please start working on the functionality or at the very minimum give an update to the status...

Update February 19th 2014: 2,000 kudos, hundreds of replies (with more than a handful of cancelations). Apparently Spotify Germany has confirmed Chromecast support is coming. An update would be nice

Update March 24th 2014: 2,500 kudos and still no update. Cancelled my subscription today. Sorry, but if you don't listen to your paying customers we will have to speak with our wallets.

Updated: 2015-10-22

In collaboration with Google, we’re thrilled to announce one of your most requested features here in The Spotify Idea Exchange is here. Spotify now works with your Chromecast.

With Chromecast, listening at home is easy. Simply plug in and cast music directly from your phone or tablet. Play, skip, browse and search using the Spotify app--all Spotify users will get the on demand experience on Chromecast. Oh, and feel free to make calls, watch a video or play games - the music will keep playing. Even if your battery runs out.

To learn more about how you can listen at home, head over to www.spotify.com/at-home.

I'd like to chime in and say Spotify and Chromecast would make a wonderful marriage.

Yes Spotify, pls give us some indication if you at least consider to reconsider this no-chromecast decision. I'm keeping my subscription only because my Sonos has a keff somewhat working Spotify app built in. Or (sidestepping...) try again to convince Sonos to implement Spotify Remote.

As I understand, the status "Not Right Now" and the explanation on the first post, means that they will likely add support for chromecast, but first they need to figure out the best way to do it. Also there are other things to implement with higher priority, that's why they will not add support in the near future.

I wonder also, given that Play Music and Spotify are competitors, how convenient is this for Google. Right now, Chromecast owners must have Play Music All Access to listen music this way. If Spotify becomes an application for Chromecast, how many Play Music users will thet lose?

@gonzalingui Google don't normally act anti-competitively when it comes to these kinds of things, they're more than happy to have Spotify along Google Play Music on Android for instance. They also support Pandora and other video competitors on the Chromecast, so I don't think we have anything to worry about there!

gonzalingui

@bbeckford yes, you are right. I forgot about Pandora, I just remember the case of Grooveshark, but I think that was another issue not related to competition.

Anyway, I hope Spotify finds an incentive about the possible user migration from Play Music.

ps: sorry for my english 🙂

bbeckford

@gonzalingui Yeah I think the Grooveshark thing was more about piracy and breaching the play store terms. Your English looks great to me! 🙂

They aren't "currently having discussions about how best to implement this". They already have a system in place called "Spotify Connect" that just needs ported to Chromecast....which by the way should be really easy considering they already have a browser based player.

gonzalingui

@brentonator for a moment I believed on their official response... I'm glad you are here to bring us the truth about the real status of the implementation, and the technical facts about how easy is to implement this, you're a hero, thank you!

Compatibility with Chromecast should be a no-brainer on Spotify's end. . .not sure it would help Google to bring on a direct competitor of Google Music though.

I was considering upgrading to spotify premium but I chose google play music because of chromecast support. I'd probably switch to spotify premium if it this functionality were added. At this point with google play music I can stream music wirelessly to speakers via bluetooth, airplay, AND chromecast (best speakers in the house are connected to the TV), and chromecast doesn't drain battery because the music streams directly to chromecast, with the phone merely functioning as a remote.
