[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

It is amazing - there are over 110 pages on this thread, and something like 1,100 comments and 3,170 "Kudos" overwhelmingly asking for this feature. There are many more voices who won't take the time to create an account to comment/give kudos to this thread. And yet, there still is no response from Spotify.

When Apple Music comes to Android later this year, I am very much looking forward to "kicking the tires", and then will likely move over if they support Explicit Filtering on Android, and the service is reasonable. I will also investigate Google Music at that time as well.

Spotify sure appears to be "tone deaf" (no pun intended), when it comes to a large segment of the population. If they feel like they don't want families to have a presence on Spotify, I am sure we can accomodate them.

Adding my voice to the chorus.  I've cancelled my subscription and have signed up for Apple Music specifically for their parental controls/filters - which are built into iOS.  On both Apple Music and Spotify, songs and albums are marked as 'Mature' or 'Explicit', which I believe is set by the label/distributor.  On Apple music, explicit songs do not show up in searches or playlists.

The interface/UX on Apple Music is terrible. Spotify has the best interface for mobile users and it's painful (and dangerous while driving) to navigate Apple's solution.  I would quit and go back to Spotify, if I were not concerned with explicit language.

To reiterate what other parents on this thread have said:  Part of our job as parents is to introduce adult concepts to our children with context.  When to do that is our choice and responsibility.  My children, aged 9 and 6, are not ready to discuss cunnilingus, fellatio, binge drinking, sex with multiple partners, codeine-based narcotics, the effects and usage of marijuana, the historical religious oppression of individuals by christianity, what exactly 'Satanism' represents, corrupt cops, corrupt drug dealers, spousal abuse, the effects of addiction, living with addiction, etc.  All those subjects are found in popular hip-hop, R&B, Rock and Metal.  And they should be: music is expression, and those artists are expressing experiences, thoughts and opinions.

I prefer to let my children find their own music and expression. I also prefer to choose when they're ready to be exposed to adult themes, and I want to be there to help with context.

Please, make a filter to parse the data you already have.  Roll it out only for searches, not yet radio, etc.  Just start.  To not do it is hubris.

Now, as an adult, I will happily spin some NWA, Biggie, ASAP Rocky, Phish, Prince, Selena Gomez, Emperor, Nothing More, Windhand, Gorgoroth and Guns N' Roses.

How can this discussion have started three years ago, and nothing has been done?

I am a school librarian, and I like to listen to music in my elementary school library during the day. I'm getting so sick of listening to piano music or disney songs. I want to take advantage of the great playlists Spotify has created, but I can't play them because there is no way to make sure the explicit songs are skipped!

At home, or by myself, I don't care. But in a work environment, I need to be able to play appropriate music.

I've been using the free version to try it out and for most part am pretty happy with service but with the amazing number of Explicit songs out there I'm finding the service doesn't meet my needs - which includes being able to listen to it when my children are in house/car/etc...   would like to have something more flexible than Pandora (which until recently I was a premium member of for 5+ years) but until Explicit songs can be filtered Spotify is a no go!!!  Maybe Apple Music is needing a try?

Get the hint? There's so many options out there - if you don't meet your customers or potential customers needs you lose!  Unless you stupidly agreed to a small print clause in your contracts with music corporations I can't imagine why you wouldn't provide this option.  You permit filtering for everyhthing else (I can listen to pop, rock, classic, christian etc.  I can even filter polka - and who would want to listen to that?)  Why not permit paying users to filter Explicit language?  I just don't get it...

As I listen to Spotify at work, I think it would be great to have this, as I notmally have to skip the songs!

rosscoandsandi

Please, please, spotify have gone to the effort to tag the songs as explicit. so use the info you have and give us the chance. or even show us the radiio edit of songs when we search.

love spotify but cant use it when the kids are around.

tjhartley

Would love this feature as I use this at work in a school and have to watch it very carefully to skip the explicits.   Though I'm sure the teenagers don't mind, I find it innapropriate.

Just started my 3-month trial with Apple Music.  It is very easy to disable explicit content.  If Spotify continues to ignore such a reasonable request, I will have no problem switching.  I suggest any and all on this thread to do the same.

APPLE MUSIC HAS THIS FEATURE!!!!  Don't get mad at a Toyota for not being a Lexus, just get the Lexus.

JJ7611

I really think this must happen. I can't play playlists that I haven't chosen or scoured through as in fear of someone dropping the f bomb whilst my kids are listening!

The school I attend limits the usage of Spotify due to the Explicit content contained. If explicit content were stored on a separate server our school would allow us to use Spotify in school as they can block the explicit content and let the non explicit content through. I'd like to continue using this as a tool (when studying this thing is a lifesaver) but we are unable to. It would be good if a workaround could be achieved with school servers.
