Clear play queue

I have to restart my spotify when I accendently start a song from a search instead of adding it to the queue (happens often to me), would be lovely if there would be a clear button for all the songs added to the queue by spotify it self.

Updated: 2020-12-17

We're happy to announce that we have implemented the Clear queue feature on our mobile app as well.

Just open the queue and you should see the Clear all button at the top

Hey folks, you can now find a 'CLEAR' button on the Play Queue in your Spotify Desktop app.

If using Spotify on your mobile device you can check the songs in 'Up Next' and then select 'REMOVE'.

Thanks for your feedback everyone!

The probable reason Spotify wants you to create your own playlists is because they're most likely selling this information to 3rd parties who want to know what bands to hire or at least giving Facebook permission to do it for them, unless Spotify finds itself in financial difficulties from people unsuscribing I don't see them making it easier for users to not make their own playlists of music that they must like because they went through the trouble of playlisting it.

don't forget that Spotify has contracts with all music labels whose music is on Spotify

Well, it's indeed really stupid and annoying that this isn't standard. I did some digging around and foud that Spotify stores the information on that playlist in a directory called:

c:\users\<username>\Application Data\Spotify\Users\<your-spotify-id>-user

Now what I did is just:

  1. Exit Spotify completely
  2. Rename the directory <your-spotify-id>-user to <your-spotify-id>-user.org
  3. Restart Spotify (The direcory is automatically recreated at this point).

Voilla, the playlist is cleared. Can't be to hard to add a button for that I guess. Anyway, just be carefull and don't go on deleting the directory immediately. I don't know what else it contains. You could try renaming some files in it just to see if it works for you. Getting rid of the whole directory may be a bit brute force but at least it did the trick. And since I didn't have too much settings I'm at least not missing anything.

I just started using Spotify, but have found the Play Queue to be very frustrating to use, due to its non-intuitive behaviour and lack of flexibility (eg see current thread about not being able to remove a song from the list. I'm cancelling my subscription because of this problem. Spotify is in general an amazing service and a great idea. They just need someone who knows how to create a UI that doesn't frustrate people. There are plenty of music players out there with intuitive, easy-to-use interfaces, I'm not sure why Spotify had to reinvent the wheel and, as one user put it, come up with a square... I'm posting this same comment on another thread, hopefully along with all the other frustrated people (some who also say they have cancelled their subscription) it will get Spotify's attention and the UI will be improved in the future. 🙂

"At the moment, the whole team is trying and improving basic features for a better Spotify experience. Once we have a perfect product we will start focusing on good features and ideas."

When will Spotify realize that, for a music streaming service, a play queue that doesn't make users want to pull their hair out is about as BASIC as it gets? The play queue needs to be priority number one. It makes absolutely no sense that it's not just been bad this long, but with the recent update actually got worse (made it harder to play just an album without continuing). Spotify's unintuitive play queue was my #1 reservation in switching to Spotify, and if another streaming service improves or a new one comes along that's decent, it will be the #1 reason I jump ship.

Spotify, please understand how important the usability of the play queue is. It's literally part of the CORE of your service. Your handling of this feature and other issues make it look like you truly don't understand user experience.

I'm giving Rdio another shot as this clear queue issue has gone on for too long and has wasted too much of my time trying different 'solutions'.

I'm totally disappointed.

I found a way of clearing the queue. I just kept clicking the forward arrow to go to the next track in the end it got fed up and crashed. When I re-started the queue was cleared 🙂

Not the ideal way and time consuming and I am NOT going to play a full album again without right clicking and queuing the tracks manually!.

On the other hand I have never had a problem with the play queue, until now, and am incensed that it is no longer retained between sessions following the recent upgrade, so that I have to recreate it each time from my various playlists ...

BTW, MOG has a much better queue - you can add and remove songs, easily clear it, add a new song to the end, insert a new song after the current song (huge!), and so on. The other great thing is that the radio function kicks in when you get the end of the queue (if you want), and you can edit the radio queue just as though you'd put the songs there yourself.

I like the idea of Spotify, but I'm very frustrated that when my queue comes to end, the music stops. Not that useful for when I have an infinite library.

Just to be clear, I subscribe to both Mog and Spotify, although I suppose at some point I'll drop one of them. They are very similar - similar music libraries, both have iPhone and Roku clients, etc., both support downloads and high bitrate playback. I originally was psyched about Spotify's iTunes playlist integration, but that's been a little bit disappointing, honestly. Spotify failed to match a lot of songs in my playlists that I know are in their library.

I notice that this thread was started on Feb. 28, 2012.  It's now mid May 2013.  That's over 1 year and 3 months.  "Not Right Now", huh?  Well, I've tried every workaround except going to a witch doctor.  My queue list won't clear.

I'll bet you've lost customers.  You're about to lose me, that is, unless I read of a magical fix that actually WORKS.  I've tried making a new list called "CLEAR QUEUE".  I've tried war chants.  I tried standing on my head.  I tried typing in French braille.  I tried channeling some ET's.  Nothing.  Nada.  Zilch.

The queue list won't clear.  You can't even move selections up or down.

The "new Spotify" is like the "brand new 1959 Oldsmobile.  With Turbo Glide!".   Only they forgot to put in the brakes.

This should be Spotify's #1 priority, and it should have been fixed, oh, probably about in early '12.  Make that '11.  Playing off of Spotify is now Lovecraft nightmare.  When I want to hear, say, Bluegrass, I get last week's queued 80's list.  Hell, I'm better off with AM radio.

Fix it, el pronto:  or lose another paying customer.  I'm serious!
