[Connect] Publish the Spotify Connect API

Spotify should publish the required documentation for implementing Spotify Connect on internet-enabled receivers / speakers.

Updated on 2019-04-09

Hey folks,

Thanks for adding your vote to this idea.

Use of the Spotify Connect Web API is now in beta. You can check out the details here.

You can also find out a lot more about devloping with Spotify at the Spotify for Developers website.

Thanks!

Opening up the API will infact drive premium subcriptions like it has been mentioned before as well. It will also keep users from jumping ship to other services.

You have done a fantastic job in bringing Spotify to so many great products in a very short time. Let the developer community do something for you as well. I strongly believe they will be very thankfull and reward you with a lot of new services and products using the great opportunities that come with the comprehensive music library of yours.

I have a Raspberry, it will be very exciting to control Spotify by Spotify android app, like the gramofon, but the raspberry can do the same because it's just blocked :/ Best regards.

Really don't understand that this is not in place already, as this would:

  • Drive customers to Premium
  • Lay the foundation for a better alternative than AirPlay (offloads phone/tablet)
  • Provide a solution to this problem before Android gets native system support for DLNA or something similar (already possible with rooted devices) ... surprised it's not supported yet!
  • .. somewhat related to previous point, grow user-base before competing streaming services open up (f.ex Wimp)
  • Who knows what cool servies 3rd party devs would come up with 😃 .. I've currently trying out Pi MusicBox and with access to Spotify Connect API this would be a *perfect* and super-cheap music streamer for my stereo.

Just my two cents ...

Do we have a timeframe on when we can expect this? 😄

+1   ...  This would enable Spotify adoption in so many new areas.  It would certainly result in added revenue.

There is literally no downside to Spotify in offering this, that I can see..

* No sitnificant Spotify resources are required (since the API must already be published privately)

* No licensing issues (Premium is required, and connect licensing has already been worked out)

* Added income.

You could even manage the adoption by requiring all developers to use an API key, although I don't see a need for this.

Honestly, I can't imagine why this isn't already published, considering what a huge increase this would result in Spotify membership over the longterm.
