[Desktop] Add support for Apple Silicon (ARM64 on Mac)

Feature request:

Add support for Apple Silicon in a future Spotify release on Mac OS.

Apple have recently released a new generation of Macs based on their own Apple Silicon. I hope that Spotify will prioritize native support for this new CPU architecture.  If so the best music platform on the Mac, will continue running great natively on the new generation Mac hardware.

Hey everyone,

Thank you all for bringing your feedback to the Community Idea Exchange and participating in this Beta test!

Your input has been invaluable and helped us tweak the app to make full use of the new CPU architecture.

We're happy to announce that the app is now out of Beta and can be downloaded from our website. You should automatically get the correct version for your Mac's CPU and all updates will be automatic as well, just the way it was in the past.

This idea is now officially implemented! Thanks once more for all your votes and posts.

Happy listening! 🎶

Guys, I'm running Spotify on M1 on daily basis like for a month and half now when I got my MBP - I've had like 10 crashes overall. Yes, it should not happen, but please be calm - it's not like buying a bread at a grocery store. There may be reasons why it's not done yet - for instance dependencies (libraries) which may not be available for ARM64. It's great to hear that WE WANT native M1 version (and I'm still waiting for it!), but it's not a matter of life. I believe it'll be here when it's possible to have it. Hope it's sooner than later. Take care and be patient.

Again, it's not the non-availability that pisses off most people, it's the fact that they don't even bother to give an answer. IF they said: "Hey, we're trying, but there is those and those issues, so this is why it's delayed blah blah blah", trust me, would be a lot less hate.

@Mendo: exactly your point. Since us, the complaining users, M1 owners, are the 0.02% of the market, we expect to have a 0.02% of Spotify attention. That means: the choice to unlock the distribution of the iPad app in the Mac App Store.

It's literally a checkbox, according to this: https://9to5mac.com/2020/11/09/ios-apps-will-run-on-apple-silicon-macs-but-major-developers-have-alr...

We're not asking Spotify to develop an app, or to recompile an app, with all the debugging costs involved with that. We're simply asking them to let us install the iPad app, that already has been developed, into our M1 systems. Please, uncheck that option. It's all we ask. Digitally Imported (http://www.di.fm) already unlocked their iPad app for us, and I still thank them for that.

Thanks for making the decision easy! No M1 support and now this!

I also canceled my subscription and get into Apple Music. Mayby I'll be back when Spotify for Apple Silicon will be ready

I can't believe there still isn't a proper response regarding the development of an M1 version. I've been using Spotify through Rosetta 2 and it keeps crashing at least 3 times a day. So gutted. I may as well change to Apple Music.

I also had to leave for apple music

its literally painful to use spotify on m1. my liked songs doesnt ever populate and tracks straight up neever start playing. please!!! i love your platform but you need to support the future of apple hardware!

I am also wondering why this is taking so long to implement. Like others have said, other companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, Google, Mozilla, have all already migrated their apps to native, like Office, like Lightroom, like Chrome, like Firefox. Sure, these are larger companies than Spotify and probably have more developers and resources, but even smaller apps are being shifted over, and unlike these larger companies who have multiple apps and services, Spotify has one app, yet the changes are so slow, and often the changes are something users never even asked for like UI tweaks and removing features.

Spotify still has its advantages in playlist algorithms and iTunes is a bit of a dog on Windows, but Apple Music algorithms continue to improve, most years get some major updates and there are rumours that Apple is working on a new Music app for Windows similar to what is available on Mac. Spotify has a lead now, but if it isn't careful it will lose out in the long run. Stop giving podcast hosts hundreds of millions and start investing that money in improving the apps and improving the music experience.
