[Desktop][Search] Return Search bar to main screen

The Search bar was recently shifted to the scroll menu on the side (Windows Desktop Client), however, I cannot see why.

The Search bar is such an essential feature, which needs quick access at any time. With its new position, I have to click the scroll menu on the side first in order to scroll right to the top, just to click the extra Search option.

When I for example create a new playlist and browse through the artists´ pages to find the fitting songs, I can not simply drag and drop the song without scrolling down the long list until i reach my playlist. Then I have to scroll all the way up again to enter a new artist into the Search bar.
This just seems unnecessarily complicated and counterintuitive.

It´s not that the space was filled with something more important anyway (not that there are much more important things than the essential Search feature)... it´s just a blank space now.

I would really appreciate it if you moved the Search bar back to its previous position at the top of the main section, no matter whether it was a band page, playlist or anything else. It could still unfold into its extra screen (like it does now) when clicking it but the position has to be easily accessible at any time.

Hey folks,

We can confirm that the Search bar is back in the main screen of the desktop app.

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange and sharing your feedback about this change!

The search feature from the top of the desktop window has been removed! This is very annoying! It might seem like a small thing, but to have to click on "search" page and then do my search there adds an extra click every time I want to search for something. That time adds up.

Please, please, please, bring back the search field to to the top of the window. Thank you.

It is incredibly inconvenient to have to press a separate button to initiate search.  How much of a problem does it cause to just float in in the corner like Spotify has FOREVER.  Is this to force us to use paid links and collections? SMH

Another unnecessarily complicated update.  What gives Spotify?  It really seems as if you failed to think through, or care, about how these changes effect everyone.

Hey there!

Thanks for your feedback on this.

We'd like to confirm that with the new desktop experience the Search button is pinned to the left side menu and it stays there when you scroll around the app.

You need to click it to activate it, which works the same as before - you had to click in the search bar to start typing.

For now, we don't have plans to change the position of Search, so we'll be marking this as Case Closed, but we'll be keeping the idea open for voting and we'll be monitoring this thread. So feel free to leave your +Votes here.

Thanks!

Is it me or did you just delete the search bar from the home page of mac desktop app.

Why would you remove search. It has to be the most used feature. Yes we love browsing sometimes, but more often than not I turn on spotify to find an artist I want to listen to. This 99% of the time involves search.

The only reason I could possibly think that you removed the search and made it so that you have to make an extra click to get to search is that you are trying to force users to click on ads and force feed us content.

Well let me tell you what. I am paying for your service, so that you don't advertise to me.

Please bring back the search bar. (And also like others have said revert back to old UI.)

Brian

It was hidden behind a button in the left hand navigation. I agree though. Search is a key feature and it should be accessible/displayed at all times as a clear call to action, and not be hidden in the menu.

Having to navigate to a "search" tab to search Spotify is a huge UX regression for me, especially considering that the space where the search bar should go is blank on other tabs anyway. And a hotkey isn't a replacement - people shouldn't be expected to memorize it to use just your app, and command-L isn't particularly intuitive.

The newest version of desktop spotify hides the search bar behind the search tab, which is pretty inconvenient and I feel like it is worse UI/UX than previously. Otherwise I really like the redesign, this just adds obstacles to the user that weren't present previously.

I agree with this, there are many reasons to not want a separate option to run a search.  It was very nice to have the search bar at the top of the screen (out of the way) so we could run a search based on what we were currently looking at.  Not sure why it was ever removed in the first place, please restore it!

Totally agree with this - I really like the new look for the desktop app I'm by no means a "Please never change anything" kind of user! But it's really useful to be able to get at the search wherever you are. It's the main way I navigate around Spotify so not having it there all the time gets annoying very quickly 😞
