Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Update Aug 2018:

well I'm still pushing HARD on spotfy on this.

Ive now got this escalated to their executive team.....
But still getting a bull**bleep** response...

"We're sorry to hear that the issue is persisting and we apologize for
the delay. Rest assured, your case has been escalated to the highest
tier in Customer Support, all communication within this email tread will
be from the Executive team from now on.

You will find though that Shuffle will play the more of the most
recently added tracks within the playlist.

One suggestion is that you could try adding tracks to Songs under Your
Music and select this to Shuffle Play and see if this performs a more
varied selection of music.

As regards to the Shuffle Play, the issue you are experiencing is
currently with our Technical Team but we’re afraid we don’t have an
exact time frame at present, but as soon as there is any update on the
situation we will let you know.

Meanwhile, if you need any further help or have any more questions,
don’t hesitate to get back in touch. "

wow, I've just found out that Spotify has in last few weeks removed the option to shuffle multiple playlists within the same folder.

Which is actually the ONLY point of having multiple folders!

Spotify, you have a PROBLEM and its called SHUFFLE.

You cant do it at present, you're like the drunk at a party who does not listen and goes home to sober up and get some treatment, which if you havent guessed Spotify is listen to your paying customers who are demanding you have a way better shuffle option!

Spotify seems to like to group the "shuffled" music by genre and artist. I often hear all of the rock songs, with artist clusters, then it goes to the dubstep, artist clusters again, then the pop, the worst of artist clustering. I don't understand why it does this; i specifically want all of the genres and artists intermingled.

The "shuffle" option is hardly that. I have a playlist with over 600 songs and every time I shuffle play the playlist, a group of songs always seem to be played. And it happens regularly, which leads me to believe it isn't lightning striking twice. The suggestion to try changing the filtering in playlists to see if it remedies the problem is rather ridiculous. I shouldn't have to go out of my way to get the app to maybe shuffle the songs. If I've chosen to shuffle a playlist I want it shuffled, it's not a hard task. And if I do happen to want to hear a certain group of songs in a playlist I can queue up the songs myself. But to have it forced on me when what I want is for an honest shuffle of songs is infuriating. Please find a fix. If the Spotify higher ups are dead set on having the app play a highlight selection and regular group of songs, please by all means create a separate option for this so the choice can be given to the listener, and give us back an honest shuffle so that we can have the variety we wanted in the first place.

Also, there was no reason to remove the shuffle playlists option inside folders. Please return it, but with a true shuffle, please.

I first complained about the shuffle function about a year ago. I see many others complaining about it but nothing changes. This morning before I got in the shower I hit random on a favourite playlist and heard five songs by the same artist. What is the point of having a playlist let alone random shuffle? I could have just played one of that artist's albums on shuffle, if I only wanted to hear that artist. The Spotify programmers don't seem to understand that people like random shuffle because they like VARIETY and UNPREDICTABILITY. If we wanted one genre or one artist in a clump, we would not be using random shuffle. I feel like I am wasting my breath.

I suggest you guys look and reply here as well:

Very similar thread.

The Spotify Community lists @4000 posts regarding the random/shuffle feature (or lack thereof) from 2012 until the present. I've read Spotify's responses and they just don't hold water. Not only do the same songs play time and again while others don't play at all, but VERY often the shuffle starts with the very same song from the previous time the feature is used. Spotify really needs to address this problem. I'm certainly not happy paying for a service that plays the same songs from my library over and over again while other songs never get played. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE create a randomize/shuffle feature that uses the ENTIRE library of songs that a user has saved. Thanks!!!

The shuffle feature is awful. There's artists on my Spotify I've forgotten I've downloaded as I never hear them. Yet I can hear pretty much an entire album in 20 minutes. Very disappointing and if it showed no sign of improvement I would consider leaving as a paying customer.

I like how there are 102 pages of posts since 2012, and the problem is not fixed. They say it's fixed, but its clearly not fixed. I've had Spotify Premium for over two years now, and I feel like I'm being bent over and f*$#ed in my **bleep**. Its such an easy fix. The best random on a computer is not truely random but however they have created the algoritm it has a tendency to repeat through the same things. Spotify why cannot you not just use the current date and time (down to the &*#$ing millisecond I hit shuffle) as the seed for the algoritm? Less than like 10 lines of code could fix all the issues. Why do you do this? I absolutely love spotify in EVERY OTHER darn ASPECT. I just want shuffle that works. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. I like how they made a system to change curse words to other words or bleep them.... but they cant fix the thing that we actually pay them for. Glad to see we have priorities straight.
