NEXT STEP

Implement an actual shuffle function

Yes, you read that right.  The "shuffle" function in Spotify is nothing more than a randomizer.  There's a difference?  YES.

RANDOM - Play one song.  The next song can be ANY song in your playlist.  Including the one you just listened to.  Though I've never had this specifically happen, I literally just heard the same song that I heard 2 songs ago.  This is how Spotify's "shuffle" currently functions.

SHUFFLE - Take your entire list, shuffle them (like cards), and play the first song in the shuffle.  Once finished, move that song off the pile.  Once the pile is depleted, shuffle the deck again and start over (maybe pop a message up).

I know enough about programming (not much) to know that shuffling is probably a bit harder than random, but come on.  I may be in the minority, but I don't have a lot of little playlists.  I have one list with nearly a thousand songs in it, because I like all the music, and am rarely not in the mood for one of those songs.  But what I can't stand is hearing the same song over and over again.  I think there may even be songs in my list I haven't heard yet, while I've heard others 4-5 times.

I know it may not matter much, but I would probably lay down the money for at least a year subscription if this feature was implemented.

EDIT: Another user pointed out that I can see what all is queued up in my shuffle by clicking the Play Queue link, and that Spotify supposedly sets up a rolling shuffle of 50 songs.  It would be nice if this range could be expanded to say 50-100% of your playlist.

EDIT 4/6/12: I just dealt with the same song 16 tracks later.  The song played the first time yesterday afternoon.  I went home, listened for a bit on my home PC (just a few songs), then started listening again this morning.  If the list recycles itself after a day, or if you log in from another computer, I see that as an area for improvement.

Updated: 2016-02-05

Hey folks, we have made some improvements to our shuffle algorithm that we are turning on as a default for all users. We'd love your feedback on how your shuffle experience changes after today (Feb 5, 2016). Thanks for your feedback, your comments are essential to helping us improve Spotify.

Update Aug 2018:

Hi folks, it sounds like quite a few of you are experiencing only the top tracks in a playlist shuffling/ playing when using Connect. This has already been reported here.

We’ve given a transparent status there explaining there isn’t a current timeline for a fix. Please do leave a VOTE there if you’re experiencing the issue and a comment. We can then bring this information back internally to show the size of the issue for our users.

If however you are experiencing issues with Shuffle when not using Connect, please get back to us in this thread we've the questions we've listed and click +VOTE. Thank you!

     Spotify needs a shuffle

     That shuffles

     The entire playlist

        Not a portion of it.

Amen!

Yes, this  seems pretty easy for them to implement, it's  a mystery to me why  anyone would  want a portion of their playlist shuffled instead of the whole thing.

Hopefully they change this...

Spotify I still have the problem listened to a song like 1 hour ago and then heard it again like come on. Make your shuffle system so you can't hear the same song for atleast a while.

loaftrain

This is a joke Spotify. I listen to my playlist of 976 songs all day at work everyday.  I get to hear, maybe, the same 30 songs over and over and over again.  There is no excuse. I could make a better shuffle algorithim in my sleep.  It's not like this is some new problem or revolutionary feature we are asking for.  A basic working shuffle has been around for decades.

If I have "shuffle & NOT repeat", I should hear all 976 songs shuffled and then the playlist should stop playing.  If I select "shuffle & repeat" It should shuffle my ENTIRE list forever, not just the same 30-50 songs.

I literally volunteer as tribute to fix this problem.  Give me your shuffle code and let me fix it.  I'll sign a non-disclousure and everything.  Let me fix this problem and everyone will be happier and you'll make more money.  Win win.

Don't  think they even read this unfortunately... I'm really not sure why they haven't  listened to their subscribers.

Thanks from everyone, @loaftrain!

Here is my draft of specifications for everyone to vote--

* On the rightClick menu for every playlist, put the simple option "Shuffle".

* When you click on Shuffle, the Spotify player produces a "New Playlist' that contains a Random arrangement of each and every track in the Original playlist once and only once.

And should there be any doubt among the confused Spotify staff-- The above is one and only one idea-- And we are using OED English, please.  Vote?

Someone Please Help Me

Shuffle still only shuffles the same few songs over and over and it doesn't play other songs at all.  Also, after it plays about 5 songs on my playlist, it automatically goes to radio station but I have 252 songs on my playlist!  It also keeps playing a song I don't want to hear but I can't delete the song and its not even on my playlist!!!  Any reason why this is happening?  Thank you so much!

Something like this happens to me when tracks get stuck in my Play Queue-- One way I sometimes get rid of this design bug in the Spotify Player is to click the "Queue" button in the lower right-- Then make sure that you click the Queue tab and Not the History tab-- Then do the following two key strokes in the displayed tracks of your Play queue several times

[Ctrl-A  then  Delete key on the keyboard] -- several times.

Then "Play" your playlist again-- starting from a different place-- maybe the middle of your playlist-- just so that you don't get bored too soon!-- Laugh with me!--

Did that work?

My Playlist is ~2.800 Songs and sometimes i listen a hour and do only get presented about 4-5 bands and even in this range only a few songs rotate. Please Spotfyers do something about this. I could not be that hard to count how often a song was played and then put its priority to a lower level.
